AM I THE ONLY ONE?

IN 68 I TRADED MY FENDER 1000 FOR SHO BUD D10. THE E9TH NECK WAS ON THE BOTTOM [NEXT TO ME. THE STORE SAID THE PREVIOUS WAS CURLY CHALKER. IN 72 I ORDERED A NEW D10 EMMONS AND HAD THE SAME SET UP ON IT. IN 04 I GOT A FESSEDEN 2 YEARS OLD AND SENT IT TO JERRY TO HAVE THE NECKS CHANGED TO MY PREFERED BOTTOM BANK.
QUESTION #1 DOES ANYONE KNOW IF CURLY HAD HIS E9TH ON THE BOTTOM OR TOP?

QUESTION #2 ARE THERE ANWAY PICKERS WITH THE SAME SET UP AS ME? THANKS MUCH BOBBY M.

Yep, Curly had his E9 on his back neck. The front neck was C6.

BobbyM-I believe the reason he did that was ,most of the time playing in Hee Haw, etc, he had to play E9 about 95% of the time, so why not put it right in front of him? Seemed like a good idea to him. Most everyone does it the other way and probably ok too.....al.:)

My Fender 1000 had the E9 on the inside neck. I had it set up that way because Ralph Mooney had his E9 on the inside neck. When I acquired a ZB it had the E9 on the outside, and it would have been a major undertaking to change it, so I left it there. Seemingly the industry standard is E9 front neck, C6 inside. Jody.

I believe Curly always had the C-6th neck on the front or outside neck of his guitar. That was his set-up in 1969 when I saw him play in person at the DJ Convention at the Hermitage Hotel.

If I recall correctly, Bob Kelly (in West Texas) does the same thing with his guitar.

Mike there are a lot of us in Texas that are setup with C6 on the outside neck, if we play D10s. Bobby Kelley still does I think. Lots of Western Swing played around this, the home town of Hoyle, Ben, and Jody Nix.

Gotta' have that SWING. keep this in mind---SWING'S GONNA' RISE AGAIN!!! (It already is here in West Texas)

Forgot to mention Bobby Kelly, picker supreme, is still playing with Jody Nix, and there's been a couple of good steel players gone through this locale--Weldon Myrick, Jimmie Loessberg, Johnny Cox, Bobby Tuttle, Al Perry, Tommy Harvell, Shady Mitchell, to name a few. Pretty high standard for us hackers.

Phred, glad to hear that Bob is doing well.

When I was in Abilene (1978-1982), I was mainly picking banjo. I hung around with a dobro player named John Rhoda. John also happened to be playing steel.

I bought John's S12 Shobud from him after he scored a D10 MSA. The Shobud moved with me to New Braunfels, where I traded it in for a D10 Blanton. Bob happened to be playing with Clay Blaker in the area at the time and bought my old Shobud.

He transferred some of the knee levers to his D10 (a gorgeous plum-colored ShoBud), and then sold the S12. Last I heard, the S12 went to Hawaii.

What a small world we live in.

BTW, do you know John Rhoda? If so, got any info on his whereabouts?

It is true that Curly Chalker had the C6th neck on the front of his guitar. I read where people would tell him to play on the front neck so that is why he come up with the idea of changing the necks around. For whatever reason it was, Curly Chalker could burn up a steel guitar regardless of where the necks were.

Mike, John Rhoda is still in Abilene and I know he works some with Bishop Powell and his sons in "Lariat". I think he still plays the MSA that he's had for many years.
