I am working on a new Gospel Steel CD of Classic Hymns or Gospel songs that will be recorded on my 1937 Silver Rickenbacher. It is quite challenging for me to do this but already has become a labor of love for me!

As non-pedal players I would like to know what are some of the songs you would want to hear on a CD of this type?

Your comments are requests are valued and I will try to comply with them.

THanks and GOD bless!

Terry, there was a guy that I heard as a kid (early 60's) who specialized in gospel on non-pedal steel. His name was Joe Talley. His wife accompanied him on piano. He was a very talented musician (he played other instruments as well). I do not know what ever became of him. He played one of the better National models. I know he made some recordings. You might try to find some of those for some ideas. One song that I remember that struck me as good was "Beyond the Sunset."

Hi John,

I don't know if it is the same Joe Talley. But there was a guy in Nashville TN years ago who recorded called Big Joe Talley. He recorded on one of Charley Pride's early recordings titled "Gone On The Other Hand." I think this guy passed away two or three years ago.

"Beyond The Sunset," a song imprinted in my mind from years ago as a kid. My brother was reallyinto Hank Williams Sr. recordings and I remember Hank recorded that Old Time Gospel Song. It is a beautiful song! Thanks for reminding me!

GOD Bless!

For Classic Hymns:

How Great Thou Art
Amazing Grace
What A Friend We Have in Jesus
No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus
It Is Well With My Soul
Blessed Assurance
In The Garden

For Gospel:

It Is No Secret
I Fly Away
Will The Circle Be Unbroken
I Saw The Light
Peace in the Valley
Down By The Riverside

I wouldn't call it a classic but this is a very beautiful song: In The Shadow Of The Cross

Aloha: Smile

A Good morning to all!

Rick, well I went and completed an arrangement this weekend and recorded the song you requested, "The Great Speckled Bird."

I found out that a man from Springfield, MO wrote the song years ago. His name was Guy Smith. He was not a minister as I had always been told. He wrote the song, sang it around various places and someone else stole it and copyrighted it. Roy Acuff later recorded it and the rest is history. My pastor knew Guy Smith and he said one of Guy's favorite things to do was to go caving. We have lots of caves here in the Ozarks.

Don, I had already recorded three of the songs you listed: What A Friend We Have In Jesus, Blessed Assurance, and I'll Fly Away.

Thanks Guys, keep them coming because I am still recording and selecting material. This has been a very challenging but rewarding experience. Even my wife likes the rough mix of some of the songs. Wink She says that is really easy to listen too. She knows very little of the steel guitar. Never heard one until we were married.

GOD bless!

Well, maybe I stand, or rather those who misinformed me stand to be corrected. I read again today where Guy Smith really was a minister. The internet states him as Rev Guy Smith. Regardless, the guy didn't get most of the royalities for the song "The Great Speckled Bird," that apparently he penned. Your thoughts on that appreciated. Alot of people recorded this song, it helped Roy Acuff to build his career in Country Music.

GOD bless

According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia,

"The Great Speckled Bird," was written by The Reverend Guy Smith. It is based on the Scripture,''Jeremiah 12:9,
'Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her; come ye, assemble all hte beasts of the field, come to devour.'
It was recorded in 1936 by Roy Acuff.

"What a beautiful thought I am thinking
Concerning the Great Speckled Bird
Remember her name is recorded
On the pages of God's Holy Word."

May GOD bless each of you!

Hey Terry....there's "Just A Closer Walk With Thee", a real strong melody, a wonderful song.

I'm noticing a lot of the songs listed here don't have a chorus or "B" section-- if there's a "refrain" it's the same melody as what went before. Is it a challenge to come up with a successful arrangement in cases like that?

Stephan, yep your right! I already recorded "Just A Closer Walk With THee."

Rick, this project should be completed sometime in the coming weeks.

Next, to let everyone know I done some more research and Rev. Guy Smith died a few years back, and I have located another minister who knew him.

Interesting story here, my pastor said that Rev Guy Smith used to come with another minister to his mother-in-law, Mrs. Nora Hash's home. THey would hold Bible studies with prayers and singing in her home. Guess what, turns out that his mother-in-law's farm joined my folk's farm where I was raised. Talk about a small world. I used to go there and play with all Mrs. Hash's grandchildren when I was about 7-10 years old. THey had an old time well you had to pump the water by hand to get a drink. THey didn't have inside plumbing, water, restrooms, and she would get out there and play baseball with us when she was 80+ years old. I remember that she lived to be around 94-95 and chewed Kentucky Twist Chewing tobacco. THey didn't own a car; they drove their tractor to the country store. They were excellent neighbors. They would do anything for you as a neighbor and she loved The Lord. I wouldn't trade those years and memories now for nothing.

May GOD bless each of you!

Thought som of you might find this interesting, I found the minister that knew and preached the funeral for Rev. Guy Smith.

Guy wrote the classic song dicussed here, The Great Speckled Bird. This man said that Roy Acuff came to Springfield many years ago and that Guy and Roy were photographed together and the Springfield News Leaders wrote and article on the whole affair. Guy definitely wrote the song. Guy's grandson a minister now in AZ sang it at his grandfather's funeral.

GOD bless!

"People Get Ready" by Curtis Mayfield. The Five Blind Boys of Alabama do a wonderful version of this song on their album "Higher Ground," with special guest Ben Harper (vocals and steel).

As we go into the final stages of this project, I would appreciate some more input on song selection. What are some of the songs that you all get the most request for when you are playing Gospel music?

We are getting a whale of ice storm here this weekend so I may not get back to the forum for a few days. I'll be around here for this evening then off for a couple days. Again Thanks for your input!

May GOD bless!

"When They Ring Those Golden Bells". I never thought of it as an instrumental until I heard Chet Atkins play it.

Hi Jude,

Thanks for reminding me that was my grandfather's favorite song.

Yes,I recorded it on my Christian Steel Guitar CD a few years ago. It is a beautiful song. I remember when we recorded it. I leaned more towards the C6th actually B6th on my 14 stringer and proved quite challenging.

I might do it on the lap steel CD now.

Thanks again! GOD bless!

Hi Don,

I have been off of the internet for about 10 days. We had a huge devastating ice storm hit us in the Ozarks. They say it is the worst icestorm we have ever had. We were really blessed, as being one of a few houses that did not loose electric power in our neighborhood.

Well, during that time off from teaching school, I recorded some of the songs you all requested. Great selection of songs, you all suggested. As mentioned before, I think this has turned out to be one of the most challenging recording projects I've ever done, but I am really into it now. It is such a change from 14 strings and a steel with 14 pedals, to a small 6 string Ricky that one holds on their lap. It's my lap-top!

This new Gospel CD, actually probably two CDs will be available in a few weeks. There are several of the classic hymns, and a few newer praise and worship type songs. All the music will point to our Lord, and it is a spiritual commitment for me!

May GOD bless!

Leaning On The Ever Lasting Arms
Praise The Name Of Jesus
Glory To His Name
There Is A Fountain
Glory! Glory Hallelujah!
I'll Fly Away
He's Coming Soon

We want the best songs for the CD. If you see those you definetly would like included please let me know. THanks and GOD bless!

Hi John ,

Yes, I always contact people for the royalties and I also copyright my songs. I am a member of ASCAP. In fact, we formed our own publishing company with ASCAP last year.

May God bless!
