Double 6-String Lap Steels

Post by Craig Ferguson »

Hi. I'm in the market for a double 6 string lap for some live gigs where I need multiple tunings. I know the stringmaster is great for this but I'm really not interested in dbl. 8 string. I've seen some older supro's and such that are double 6. If any of you have information on some models/brands that we're particularly good, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

I believe that Stringmasters came as a double 6 as well as the more common double 8.

For sure eye appeal I have used my Oahu Iolana dual 6 (Valco made). It's a crowd pleaser.

I have a '61 Supro double 6 that I bought from the original owner in pristine condition. It is a fine playing instrument with very nice tone, sounds best a little dirty. Only thing I would change, perhaps, is the fact that the second neck is not offset. You see these relatively frequently on ebay - expect to pay $500-600 in good shape. Pretty good bang for the buck.

Well I think you are in luck. Double 6 string necks at not as popular and less expensive. Just about any builder who built double 8 necks also built double 6 necks.

I have a 1954 double 6 Rickenbacker (DW 12) and it's sure fun to play. I have seen numerous double 6 neck steel guitars on eBay that were well built.
