Would only a simpleton buy one of these lower priced units? (I am considering it). Is this a 'you get what you pay for, expect quick failure' thing or a 'they all come out of the same factory, just find the lowest price' thing? |

You crack me up Jon! That is a good one!
I bought a SimpleTech USB drive a few months ago and immediately learned that it contains a 250 GB top quality IDE Western Digital 7200 RPM disk, with an 8 MB cache. It has worked flawlessly, everyday, since then. I took it on the road to Little Rock, in November, and it worked perfectly with my notebook. I rate the SimpleTech external drives at 100%, so far.
PS: I bought mine at OfficeMax when it was selling for $99.99, regularly $159.99.
PSS: It runs cool and can be left on always, or turned off at night. It has a rocker power switch on the top rear panel. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Excellent. in fact Office Max is what I'm looking at--15 minute walk. A 160 GB unit for $79. Question: the specs say 2MB buffer. Is buffer the same as cache? And if so, will I regret the 2 MB vs. your 8 MB cache? Or are these different things?
edited to add---my needs are for backup and to move all my sound & youtube files off of my 30 GB harddrive to reduce the load--only 8GB left there.
-------------edited again to answer my own question--yes, buffer & cache seem to be talking about the same thing. The bargain I'm seeing no longer really measures up since it's comparing apples & oranges. The 8 MB version of the 160 GB unit is $120. Looks like I'll wait for a deal like the one you saw.. |
