My main inspiration for taking up the pedal steel was a CD by the doyen of english female folk singers Sandy Denny. Sandy came to prominence with Fairport Convention who defined Folk Rock in the sixties.
The CD in question is Gold Dust IMCD 252 524493-2 a recording made in late 1977 just weeks before Sandy died following a fall in her home. This concert was released in 98 the tapes having been overdubbed extensively to bring them to a modern standard. Sandy had by 77 broadened her repertoire to include a lot of her own songs. Her band included such luminaries of the British scene as Dave Mattacks on drums and Pat Donaldson on bass. Pete Wilsher is credited on Pedal Steel with the incomparable Jerry Donahue on guitar. I have sought out Pete Wilshers solo LP Steel Seasons which was a bit of a disappointment.
The sleeve notes for Gold Dust states - most of guitars were rerecorded by Jerry Donahue... and I wonder if he played the Pedal Steel parts too. Jerry can play a Telecaster and make it sound like a steel but does he ever play Pedal Steel too?

I don't know the answer, but I want to say that Fairport Convention's "Liege and leaf" album from 1967 or 68 is one of my all time favorites, and one of the few from that era that still hold up after all these years.
Sandy Denny had the voice of an angel and her death at age 30 was a real loss. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

I 've known Jerry for a long time and I've never known him to play steel. |

If you've heard Jerry on the Iain Mathews LP 'Journeys From Gospel Oak' (rec. 1972, issued '74, reish 2006), then you know he's a killer country picker. |

The most I can say is that Pete Kleinow played on Sandy's North Star Grassman & the Ravens album. I have heard some live recordings circa 1974 that sound like it MIGHT be a pedal steel on them, but just as likely, Jerry Donahue playing with a B-Bender.
Have had no real confirmation as to if Fairport ever did tour with a
steel player. |
