Topic: goodrich volume pedal noise problem |

| I just bought a new 120 goodrich volume pedal. right before I open it up all of the way there is a little scratchy noise that I can hear. its not too bad but its annoying. Is this typical for most volume pedals to have a little bit of noise? The pot and pedal both look brand new. Is there a way to get rid of It? |

Yes. Use a little of "Control/Contact" cleaner and lubricant from Radio Shack.
Try to get a good blast in the seams of the pot, between the metal housing and fiberboard. Allow it to seep all inside while working the pedal open and closed.
Pot. pedals will do this regardless of how old they are.
Hence the popularity of the Hilton pedal. |

| thanks for the info. Ive got some multi purpose lubricant that sprays, and some super oil. Wich of those do you think would work better? If I use the spray is there anything I should avoid spraying on the pot? Im not to familiar with the terminology. |

| You need to use volume control cleaner, not oil or some type of non electronic contact spray. |

| I have had problems from time to time with a scratchy noise in my goodrich pedal. I have used the contact cleaner shown above with some success. I have also found that if the string wrapped around the volumn pot shaft is not at 90 degrees pulling angle that the noise can occur. After adusting the angle as stated the noise went away. |

Sorry, but I have found that to be untrue. My pot pedals are as quiet as a church mouse., I've bought, fixed up, and sold quite a few pedals in the last few years. I get very satisfactory results from my pedals, infact. "Hence the pot volume pedal". |

| I bought a new Goodrich pedal about 2 years ago. Saturday I did some recording and we could hear the pedal with a scratchy sound when I pushed it down. I cannot hear it with a live band but it showed up when I tried to record some steel tracks. I am going to replace the pot and if I still get the noise I will buy another pedal. I wanted to shoot some air in the pot but I did not have any and did not want to stop and head back into town. That is one reason Bobbe Seymore preaches about having two of everything. When Bobbe speaks, I usually listen but this time I got caught when I should have had a secondary pedal. |

Not everybody has had good luck lately with pot pedals. My original Goodrich 120 pot pedal went from 1982 to 1994 without a single bit of noise, playing up to 5 nights a week and practicing constantly. A replacement Allen Bradley pot in 1994 took me to 2006 where I purchased a pot from (see here )
Tom Bradshaw that so far has been very quiet. Many years of crystal clear recordings were made with pot pedals and they can be as trouble free as any pedal with the correct pot. I like the sound I get with my pot pedal a lot better than the sound I get from my LDR2 (which is a fine piece of engineering). I sure can't defend anyone manufacturing a pot pedal with an inferior pot, but with a good pot, I think they are a great choice and they certainly are simple to set up.
