some of my steel playing

Post by Matt Lange »

My band Jungle James recorded a demo last weekend that is now up on the web. We did 3 songs, one of which ("Angels in the outfield") features yours truly on my modified Artisan Lap steel. The first two tracks are more jam-bandish, but the third one is more of a folk-rock number and i think you guys will like it. Ignore the "secret track" that comes in after it though, that's what happens when some college kid's get around a microphone.
Anyway, let me know what you think. In my opinion the whole thing has a bit too much reverb going on (especially the vocals), but if you guys have any thoughts/pointers/snide remarks regarding my steel playing please let me know.
Hope you enjoy: www.myspace.com/junglejamesband

Matt: I thought you did a great job. Steelers will see the simplicity (although you did some cool tricks on the solo, albiet it got away from you there key-wise a couple of times), but for the every-day, nonmusician music lover, I think your steel playing made the song way better than what it is.

Cool music Mat, first two tracks remind me of all night caffine-fuelled jams I used to have! As to being in key... I certainly couldn't do any better.
Keep up the good work.

i hear the same intonation mistakes you guys are. we did 2 takes of that song, and everyone else in the band thought the take was solid, so i didn't argue.
thanks for the compliments and comments

Hey Matt -- I have a myspace account, but have no clue as to how to listen to you music. Where on your page is the link to the songs you mentioned? I find pretty much everything about myspace unnavigatable and annoying, but then, I'm not part of the blogger nation, really. Image

Is there a way you can link them directly to the files here?

Thanks. BTW, I'm originally from The People's Republic of Madison, too! Hated the cold, though, so had to go south.

Todd, i'm not sure why you can't access them, the song window should pop right up when you go to the page, to the right of the picture. I'd say keep trying, sometimes myspace just doesn't work very well.
Andy, i'm using my first acoustic guitar, a Mitchell. It's a cheap instrument made in Indonesia (about $300 new) but it's a solid spruce top and gets pretty good sound. It's been collecting dust since i got my Martin a few years back, so i decided to put a nut extender on it and set it up for lap style playing. Both the songs here are in Open D tuning, and i use open D for pretty much all of my slide playing.
