You are looking at a Frypan replica made in '50s by an obscure metal shop in the suburbs of Osaka, Japan. My friend who unearthed and refurbished it beautifully says its quality is superb and it sounds as good as, or even better than, Rick Frypan. It is noteworthy that it was made in the era when people were struggling to recover from devastation after the WWII.It has a horseshoe pickup with covered magnet. Despite its fine quality Superphone is least known even among steel enthu's here because it was marketed only locally.

"Sounds as good, or better, than Rick Frypan." It is a great looking little guitar; however I can't feel it would match up to the "Rick Frypans" made in Shenandoah Valley - especially when played by Rick Aiello. He amazes me with the sounds he gets out of his instruments. I'm still playing his "Christmas Mini Concert" he put on the forum during the holiday season. Some great picking on Christmas favorites.
Why not pack up your guitar and bring it to the Shenandoah Valley Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival in April. Japan and Virginia are not that far apart, right?
I have a feeling there will be a bunch of unique guitars, and pickers, at the festival.
By the way, I have heard of the "other Rick guitars" - those not made by Rick A.

By saying Rick Frypan, I meant a Frypan made by Rickenbacker not by Mr. Rick Aiello. I agree with you Mr. Aiello sounds fantastic in playing any steels, his eponymous frypan in particular. In an attempt solely to satisfy our curiosity I have invited the owner of Superphone to make an audio clip, first Rickenbacker Frypan followed by Superphone, to be uploaded here(if don't fail it again). Wish that it could happen.

There are a lot of Rickenbacher frypans around that don't sound all that great, but then there are a few that will come through with "that" tone. Mine isn't all that great, but passable.
So the opinion of comparison depends on which frypan it was compared to.
A long scale seems (to me) to have a nicer sound. |
