The thing that is different about the chord drones I have on the CD is that they are absolutely beatless. I had a computer/composer guy make them. They are in pure JI tuning.

Bob,that must be why a lot of the single-note drones and root notes of chords are actually flat or sharp from equal temperament. I just realized that for trhe first time the other night, checking them with my little Korg tuner. This doesn't mean practicing along to these roots has no value, but it might be something to be aware of, if people are thinking they can just visually remember positions for all the keys.

Jeff,
I left everything in pure JI to make sure I don't rely on my vision to play in tune. When I'm playing and the piano is sharp, the string bass player is flat, and the guitars are capoed I still need to find a way to sound in tune and make the singer sound good. I have gotten better at hearing the tonal center of whatever is going on by practicing my listening skills.

If you really want to find your bar in some weird places on the neck use the single note drones as the 3rds or 6ths of whatever scale you are working on. If you can feel comfortable practicing along to a drone as a 6th playing in tune on the bandstand or in the studio will be much less effort.

Its important not to retune your steel to the drones because you will be chasing your tail rather than learning how to adjust the bar to make it sound good.

Bob,
Thankyou for this CD. I've been practicing with it and it is rather absorbing once you get going with it. I can really see where it will help a lot in the development of playing in tune. As well as sustaining single notes and chords, it gives a good backdrop for practicing scales and improvising also. Very useful.

I'll add to this just to say that most of us look at the neck when we play and the fret markers are the guide posts for being on pitch. After buying this CD and playing along I realized I've been flat for some time now. I'm pretty attuned to hearing the pitch but one can easily fool one's self into BELIEVING your on pitch simply because it LOOKS like you are, going by the fret markers. Made a world of difference for me in a short time. Many thanks, Bob.

I'm glad its working for you. And thanks all you guys for your orders. As a matter of fact the CD just went "cardboard". If sales continue it should hit plywood (for all you Roadhog fans ) in about 4 more years !

I've noticed that if I practice with the cd, the stuff I record is not as pitchy for the next couple of sessions. This thing works.
