Hey Rick.....cover your ears, I don't want you to hear this.. You don't handle this stuff very well.

Rick is one of the heaviest musicians I have ever met and gigged with. He has a horn section going on in his head at all times...No Kidding. One day I hope he writes a book about his family and musical experience.. Just a little backround for the forum folks....

His dad was a famous vaudeville magician and Rick grew up in that environment, working behind the curtain with the levitation machine and helping in his dad's magic shows...some great stories about he and his dad for sure...he lost his dad last year..

His mom is a jazz pianist...world class. I've heard her...Completely unbelievable!
at 80 something she still sounds like Oscar Peterson...

Rick has the same chops on guitar, syth guitar, steel guitar, bass, piano and sings awesome. a truely magical musician and friend..

It is very un-nerving having rick playing bass over my shoulder as we have many times. I don't let you know it but you scare the sh** out me on stage..

Please keep up what you are doing bud.. That tune really knocked me out. Your biggest fan!!

Aww gee Kev....ya got me all choked up! Thanks so much for the nice words. Yeah I miss my dad(aka Bob Damon The Great)alot! He would be proud to read some of these sweet responces to my forum post. He showed me it's ok to look up at the audience. Look 'em in the eye & grin. My mom "Livvy Taylor" is out to So Cal for a visit, and we've been working together on a version of Lush Life that might be my next post. Hard to keep up with her though. Kevin, you never have to worry about me playing behind you. I'm listening hard cuz you play beautiful steel guitar!

Thanks again to all you guys! I'm really touched.(or is that touched in the head?)

Kevin; I have to play steel with that Genious standing beside me on Bass also....When Heather Myles comes to Texas and Brings this world class Steeler/Musician, to play Bass...ha...
I tell Heather all the time...:"Why do you use all these other Steel players on your CD's, when you have the Best and he even plays in your Band"???? She always replies....: "Oh I know and I did everything I could to get him on at least one song on this last CD"....By the way it was the last song on the CD called> "Cry me a River" and we all know; only Rick S. could play that song.....I know I can't....as I could only name the first chord and ALL the other ones I don't have a clue...ah..ha.

Ricky...what I told Kevin applies to you too! I love playing a supporting role to INCREDIBLE musicians like yourself! It's more important to me to seek out inspiration from my soulfull comrades than to have to try and be always on my top game. That's the beauty of doubling. I've had the opportunity to play onstage with so many of my guitar and steel guitar hero's without ever having to get into a competition mode. I love rooting y'all on! Although part of the fun is to "get into your kitchen" now & then.

Anyway....traveling with a doubleneck steel is getting almost impossible in this day & age, and while youre sweating packing up and loading out, I'm out having my second sasparilla.

Dirk...I'm really not sure if it was Roland Kirk or Jon Hendricks. I only know that this wasnt the Joni Mitchell version, which is a little wordy for my purpose. I only sang the first verse.(of two) [This message was edited by Rick Schmidt on 29 December 2003 at 01:00 PM.]

A few of you guys have emailed and have said you've been having problems hearing this clip. You might try right clicking, click "Save Link As..." (on a PC at least), then save it to a temp folder or somewhere where your MP3 player can play it. (if you have one.) Then all you need to do to delete it is hit "shift" + "delete" if you don't want to keep it on your hard drive. The streaming thing doesnt always work on my older computer/internet connection either.

Wow, I missed some good stuff on the forum while I was away, Rick's recording of Pork Pie hat being one of them.

Rick this is really fantastic!. Your tone, feel, choice of notes and harmony are terrific. When your vocal comes in, it is truly haunting and right in the Mingus/Miles vein. Unbelieveable Rick!! You are truly innovative and amazing! It's hard enough to play jazz on steel, let alone to sing too. Not only that but you're a great lead guitarist, and expert bassist too! Some guys like you just got a double portion on talent! How about making a steel guitar CD this New Year?

Aww Geezz! I had this about half downloaded and got side tracked. Finally got to it today.

What a track. I ain't got the words.

I'd pay fifty bucks admission to watch a single act like that. Seriously.

Don't discount trying a single. At least try it with a couple hours material. Mose, etc. Man you'd SELL.

Another thought might be "Music of the Night" from the Phantom of the Opera.

Either way, what you've done is GREAT!
