Mike:I use the Goodrich 120 volume pedal..I've had it 5 years and just replaced the pot for the first time.As far as picks I like the Jim Dunlop, they have a nice taper that won't chew up you're cuticles, and a National speckled thumb pick. That's what works for me,Stu

Best picks? Those that feel good on your fingers after an hour or two of picking.
Comfortable and stay in place.
Now IMHO, steel picks sounds better than brass to me. Sometimes the thinner steel picks feel better to me. Dunlop and ProPic have many variations. Thumb pick. One that fits comfortably and is not real thick. National, Golden gate, Dunlop, Herco are popular brands. The really thick ones are fine on Dobro. Stay on the thin side for electric steel.
Find them at Elderly Instruments web site.

Volume pedal. I would recommend (new or used) Goodrich 120 or L120 (low model). Inexpensive, easy to repair on the job. Find them here on the Forum.

Your mileage may vary.

hope this is helpful.

that is just my take on the deal. There is no right answer.

I've been using the Goodrich 120 for about 10 years, had to replace the pot first time about 2 months ago.As far as picks I started using plastic finger [I use three]picks a few months ago, they work for me.A large dunlup thumbpick. The main thing is what works for each individual.

Why does everything have to be the best? I'm second best,or maybe third,or----?Everybody wants the best, to be the best, hear the best music, the best steel players. You want the best weather? be in western N.Y. tonight,it's 14% cold, snowing windy."the best is yet to come" . Joe

Plastic picks are quieter on the strings but they're not so malliable as metal ones. Metal ones are easier to bend to the shape of your fingers.

Everyone knows, the better your gear, the better you play! So, If you have the "best gear you play the "best".

Guys, take it from me, I've been trying to play steel for 50+ years. I have had the worst gear, and the "best", I still sound about the same on any of it. I will promise you, I don't sound anywhere near the "best". Concentrate on getting to the point where you play proficently and the gear comes after that. Again, I am speaking from a lot of experience and a lot of $$ wasted.

BTW, We have Forum Members that sell all the different types of picks and accessories that are available anywhere. They need our support a lot more than the big boys do.

Regards,
Bob

I use Jeff Newman picks and will never switch. I use a Goodrich LDR2 volume pedal and love it. Oh, and I also use a Golden GAte thumb pick.

WHAT'S BEST?,Whatever works for YOU is the best.I was looking through my old Steel guitar mag.at all the ads for guitars,at least 99 percent of the builders say their is best at something,Tone, sustain, weight, ease of playing, less cab.drop,etc.You don't expect ANY of them to say their product is inferior to their competitor's.The bottom line is if you play a Bud,Carter,Emmons,Zum,GFI,Williams,MSA,etc, etc,[they are all GOOD guitars IMO]If you play a Carter Starter or the 14 grand guitar Bobbe has for sale and YOU are happy with it then THAT ONES THE BEST.I use plastice picks[most pickers don't]but they are the BEST for me.If it works for YOU then it's the BEST.

National NP2s for fingerpicks, a large Dunlop thumbpick filed easily down to the profile of a Blue Herco, and a Hilton VP.

What I've liked the best for quite a few years now is plated(?) Dunlop Gauged (.025) Finger-Picks and the Lg. White Dunlop Thumb-Pick. And within the past 6-mo. I've become very partial to the newer Lo-Profie Hilton-Pedal! If you're trying to increase the sustain-effect, this volume will keep building until the cows come home for lunch! No, I'm not a cowboy¡
