Hello
I see a Stonemans LP-On the road-on CMH,that is listed as bluegrass album.The tune Steel guitar rag is on there as well.Did they use a steel player on this album,or is the tune played on another instrument??

| They're a traditional bluegrass group, and SGR is on several of their albums. To the best of my knowledge, it's always played on a Dobro. |

| My brother Jerry Monday, played Dobro for the Stoneman's for seven years back in the 70's. He played Steel Guitar Rag on couple of albums. |

It could have been Scotty Stomeman. The great fiddle player Scotty Stoneman played all the instruments. He could play banjo like Earl Scruggs or Don Reno. A friend of mine played in a band with Scotty for a couple of years and he swears Scotty could sit down at any steel guitar and take a few seconds to check the copedent and program his brain and them play as well as anyone in Nashville. I never heard him play steel but as I fiddler I can assure you that he was something out of this world with his ideas and tone, etc...
Scotty was a showman and did a lot of "trick" stuff, but this was not to cover up any lack of playing ability. He was probably the best that I've ever seen. Key's didn't matter to him. He'd just as soon play in one as the other.
Unfortuniately, Scotty had some problems that prevented him from being in the recording lime light. These problems rewarded him with a very early death.

While I respect the opinions of the honorable member from Austria, I still beg to differ.
This instrumental was really done on a Norwegian Harding fiddle through X15/BS/648
Edson Maximizer, - emulating a steel! The player - who was of Norwegian heritage - decided to put this new apparatus through it`s paces, and fortified by liberal servings of lutefish and aqua vitae(!!) - the recording went like a greased pig through a feeding trough!
So there you have it, Egil Baby, and very Merry, lutefish laden Christmas to you and Jofrid, too! |
