Sneaky Pete Kleinow! He plays an 8 string Fender 400 with 9 pedals and tunes it to a B6.

Do a forum search. There have been lots of discussions about him.

Have fun. Dave

BJ - there are several of us around here who play old Fenders using the same copedent, and I just adapted it to a 10-string GFI as well. In addition to the 9 pedals (of which he only used 8 - #9 was sort of a "place holder" for his right foot) he installed two knees in the 70's. The guitar is an older (long scale) 400, heavily modified with two pickups (more at different times, including a MIDI system that never quite got going), all kinds of built-in electronics..but the standard Fender cable-pull system (with a few modifications to overcome the single raise/single lower limitation).

His copedent is listed on the forum's copedent page. It's somewhat similar to a C6 tuning, but with some E9-style changes. Really a very early universal tuning that works quite well for all kinds of music - no chromatic strings, not really a "speed picking" setup - but very musical and unique.

Nobody plays like Pete. There are many who emulate him and do a great job, but he's one of a kind. Also one of the nicest, most humble gentlemen you could ever meet.

The first and third Burritos albums, plus the Flying Again and Live in Tokyo recordings are some of his best commercial Burritos recordings, but there are a bunch of boots around where he just tears it up - makes the official releases look pale by comparison. Other nice work is his stuff with Linda Ronstadt, "This might be just a One Shot Deal" with Frank Zappa, and Jackson Brown's version of "Take it Easy", which might be his shining moment. In the early 70's it seemed he was everywhere at the same time on the west coast.

And music wasn't actually his "day job" all the time - he's a skilled stop-motion animator, working on the Gumby series, Terminator, Pillsbury dough Boy and many other TV and film projects.

Or 23" for the 'burst '63 and later models. My 1000 is a long-scale; my 400 is a short scale, with added knees an a second pickup.
