Why nicknames?

Hi Mikey, My girl friend Jess calls me "Bumpy" all the time, not Micky my name. This is not for what you may be thinking of

Actually it's because of all the bumps on my body from scars after all the surgeries I've had

I think we use nicknames because they're fun. When I was younger people called me Tater. Now they call me old man if they call me at all .

Although she never admitted it, my mother didn't like me even when I was a newborn so she named me Carroll. Thats why I use CC which my old friend Jerry Byrd said he liked as that was his favorite whiskey,CC Canadian Club. cc

Mine came from Walt Collins, a bassist I was working with in a road band in the mid 70s. We were working "The Crystal Club" in Rapid City, SD. We were playing an uptempo swing song and he was singing. When it came my time for the ride, he said, "Ah, here's Tiny Olson" and it stuck. I didn't ask for it but at 6'4'' and about 350lbs. at the time I guess folks thought it was cool.

Tom and Michael...there was another DJ on WCMS. I think Warren Mueller was his real name. He was known on the air as "Travelin' Jess and all the Mess from 'CMS".

I was a resident of the Tidewater area since 1963 living in Portsmouth since 1973 until 2001. Returning to my home town of Kinston NC as a result of my wife passing in Sept 2000. Worked in all the clubs in the area both Military and Civilian. Had a 6 year run at the world wide known "Green Wheel Inn" on Military Highway at Southern Shopping Center as the resident Steeler for Jimmy Hutcherson and the "Crescendos". I was also with the ever famous "Tee Maroney Show" at the "Nashville East" until 1989. Had to leave the bars and smoke filled clubs because of my problem with emphysema.

I apologise for hi-jacking the main subject of this thread.

I'm thankful I've been using a stage name since my teens. I had a stalker problem a while back and was thrilled she was never able to find out where I lived (even though she tried to follow me home from gigs a couple of times). So, as far as I know, she still doesn't know that Chris Forbes is my real name!! woo-hoo!!!

Hi Michael, "air time" was not Warren's main agenda. I think he subbed for the regular DJs if for whtever reason they could not do their shows. I think he left WCMS for full time involvement with a recording studio which was also affilliiated with WCMS. Carolina Charlie and the 4 C's were recorded by his studio as well as a lot of other talent in the area at that time. He could have gotten into radio and recording after you left. Kenny, I asked Mom and Dad about Warren today. They certainly did remember him. He was primarily in sales at the station. That's why I didn't remember his name. I was just a kid...

Buddy might be able to answer this, but didn't a whole group of Nashville folks have nick-names? I know Patsy and Ralph Emery, and Dottie West were just a few.

I was always making up stage names since it seemed that so many of the steel players I enjoyed in the 70s had nicknames.

I used Jake, Gusty Winds, Flojo, but Smokey stuck with me. That started because I wore a Smokey the Bear bolo tie on stage. I picked it up when playing in West Yellowstone in 1983. Most everybody except my folks back home call me Smokey.

I did a numerology analysis on this name and it indicated an entertainer. I hope that is true.
