Awesome! He's got some really nice feel. That's the first video clip of Curly I've seen. It's nice and clear, with great audio. Thanks for posting it.

Is that a green Professional or a Pro II?

Thanks, Arch. Chris, I think Curly's C6 neck was in front.

Incredible.

I thought that Curly put the C6 on the FRONT neck of his intruments.

Also do I see that Curly angles the top plate of the guitar back towards him a little?? Bet there are a lot of pedal steel guitar legs being adjusted right now!!

I guess it's not to early to announce that the DVD project is back on track, and should be available in time for the holidays.

Curly's stepson said he wanted to take over the project, but apperntly he is too busy to do it, so I've taken it back.

As I write this, all the material has been digitized and edited into 3 programs. One for each of the L.A. sets, and one for the St. Louis set. You'll be able to play each set individually, play each song individually, or watch the whole thing through from start to finish.

At present the sound is being tweaked, and the menus created. I've been told to expect a master disk by the end of this month, and then it's only a matter of getting them duplicated.

I am supervising this project, but the actual work is being done by our fellow forumite Mike Brebes. Mike is putting in dozens of hours on this.

I WILL NOT BE SELLING THE DVDs MYSELF. Sales will tentatively be handled by b0b, Scotty, the PSGA in New York, and the new Southwest Steel Guitar Association in Arizona. Perhaps some other retailers as well.

An announcement will be made when they are actually available. I espect this to happen in mid to late November.

Very nice clip of Curly Chalker's C-6th style, perhaps from the late 1960s.
The guitar player looks familiar. Does anyone know who he is?

I know it's a "simple" song, but the playing is so impeccable. And the tone, no effects, no delay, no nothing, just good guitar, good amp, and phenomenal taste and technique. This IS the way to do it. Accept no substitute.

Jeff-You got it right as usual. Curly didn't need effects most of the time.

Roger-Jimmy Capps as now retired with a pension from the Grand Old Opry. He put in his time and paid his dues.

Chris -Looks like a Professional to me. Great tone. He did have the C6 on the front neck on his MSA's later. Not doubt the Sho-bud was setup standard at the time....al

Al, I believe Curly had the C-6th tuning on the front neck of all his guitars, including
his Fender Guitars.
I saw Curly at the DJ Convention in Nashville in 1968 with his Baldwin model Sho-Bud. His C-6th tuning was on the front neck of that guitar.

I wish there were alot more Curly Chalker videos around, man, one could listen to this steeler for hours on end. He was truly a master at this instrument. I don't think he got the deserving credit for being such an innovator of sound and style he deserved. That song he played on with Carl Smith " I Love You Because" is one his greatest works. Its as fresh today as it was back when he did it. He big band sound on the C6th neck is fantastic.

This show was taped in the early 70s and Curly was using his ShoBud Baldwin Crossover. Within a few months of this taping, Curly started using his MSA around '73.
This ShoBud was sitting upstairs at the ShoBud retail store on Broadway in April of 1973 when I visited with Jack Boles, who was working there. I would've loved to own this guitar. It had some major damage to the front apron as if it had been dropped. I'm sure there was some story to accompany the damage.

Click above for great music that I'd describe as sorta California country. IMHO, the promising beginnings of Garcia, Young, Cage etc are even better here.

Gary,

I thought Curly's Baldwin was maple with rosewood necks and front? This one looks green, and has Grovers - unlike the Baldwins which have Schallers. Did he have his Baldwin refurbished or modded? Was it this colour when you saw it at Sho~Bud?
