Hey Gang,

I had the opportunity to play several resophonics this past Friday at a local music shop. The one I was kind of pleased with tonal was a Dobro 60 DS dating from 1979. I've been playing a 2002 Regal RD 45 all tweaked out with a Quarterman cone, bone nut, new bridge, etc. for the past 3 years. I had thought that I wanted a Beard Gold Tone, since it's in my price range, but after playing it this past Friday, well.... I like the "old timey" sound of the Dobro but I've heard some are better than others. Where can I find a resource to enlighten my on various Dobros, versus resophonics. Also are there any other resos that are recommended in $1200 price range. I'd prefer to play before I buy and there's not a lot of options in the San Francisco area. b0b, any tips from up north?

Thanks a lot,

Ian Reynolds

I've found that Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto has a pretty good variety of resophonics to compare. That's where I compared the Beard Goldtone, Wechter Scheerhorn and Regal RD-52 in this earlier discussion. I'm assuming that's where you did your comparison.

Other good stores include Eric Schoenberg's in Marin and The Fifth String in Berkeley.

I've found in my own experience that Dobro® brand resophonic guitars can vary widely in tone and quality. One of the best sounding resos I've ever heard was completely beat up visually, but sounded great.

The ResoNation forum might be a good place to hang out if you don't get your questions answered here.
