Hi my name is Kevin and I'm a steel-aholic. Or something...
I swear, this steel guitar thing has really gotten out of control for me. I just can't seem to stop it: practice, gigs, thinking about practice, thinking about gigs.
I've even developed a really bad habit of mentally hearing steel parts in any type of music. The 5th Symphony, no problem...
I'm pretty sure I still have a wife and 2 kids in the house. But I stay mostly in my music studio/tiki bar in the garage - steel bar in 1 hand and a fist full of strings in the other.
Last week my oldest daughter shrieked hysterically in terror at the sight of an unknown intruder breaking into our house. It was me.
At one time I had pretty good social skills. You know, meet other humans, introduce yourself, break into some assorted small talk.
Now when asked a question by someone, I have problems finding words and answering in language that doesn't involve grips, tunings, modes, or measures.
I know I should admit that I really have a problem and seek help. But I really don't plan to, and worse, I really don't care!
(the only blonds I hang out with have 3 necks...)

Kevin, good; you are perfectly normal (unless you have no desire to be normal).
Let your steel guitar technique do the talking. Any of us can get married and raise rug rats. It takes a special dedication to be a good musician.
Don't give up the family; but don't let it be your whole life. |

Kevin,
You DO need a doctor. The only two I know are Dr. Hugh Jeffreys and Dr. Bob Strum -- both of whom are steelers.

Aloha Jesse,
Well. Our band, originally was Hawaiian/Rockabilly/Western Swing.
And whilst I love all that music from a steel perspective, I found my heart was with the old Hawaiian style.
Anyway, I had to ask our guitar player to leave our group as he was taking the band away from Hawaiian.
Fortunately, I picked up a business card in a little music store by my house. It was from a kanaka braddah named Pat Enos.
Pat is a vituoso ukulele player, as well as a Guitar jazzer, Hawaiian born and raised (hanao 'a hanai). He's bringing our band back to traditional and hapa haole style. His father played the Island circuit back in the day.
Pat's very good friend and once-a-week jam partner is ukulele/jazz box master Bill Tapia. Bill played ukulele at the opening of the Royal Hawaiian hotel in Waikiki in 1927 at the age of 15 or so.
I hope to get him to sit in regularly with our band as we live in ajoining cities.
(now, back to practice...) |

Great post Kevin. Had me laughing. I don't seem to have it (yet) as badly as you do but I am really digging the learning trip right now. Congrats and have a ball!

Hey Kevin, howzitt? I am in San Diego and play weekly with the Moonlight Beach Group in Encinitas. Pat and Bill come down and play with us frequently. How about next time they come down, you come down with them and bring the steel. Let me know when and I will bring my steel as well.
I look forward to meeting you and singing and playing some traditional Hawaiian music with you.
