I have been wondering if anyone might know what PSG players played with Johnny Paycheck?
I was in a road band playing Riverton Wyoming and met a guy named Chuck Schultz. He had a PSG shop there and was selling guitars and working on them. Never saw him agian and always wondered what happened to him. He said he had played with Johnny Paycheck for a while. And i can still remember his closet full of rhinestone suits and boots to match. just was wondering if anyone had heard of him?

Seems like it's Lloyd Green on most of the recordings. |

I noticed a picture of the Pro II Jim Murphy's played on for Johnny Paycheck on Ricky Davis' House of Wood site. He played for Johnny Paycheck from 72/73, according to that info. |

There used to be a Chuck Schultz living in Hungry Horse Mt., who sold Steel guitars and played in some bands around the area. Last I heard he was living in Kalispell, Mt. Don't know if it's the same guy you are looking for but could be. Never saw any suits with rhinestones and the like. |

I was playing fiddle and guitar in the house band at Dewey Groom's Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, TX, during the mid to late 1970's. In 1976, Johnny Paycheck made several appearances there with Jim Murphy on steel at that time.

Back in 1965 or 1966 I saw Johnny Paycheck at Carnegie Hall in NYC and Doug Jernigan was dressed in his Class A's on a weekend pass from Fort Dix, NJ playing steel for him.

I have always thought that I am the only musician who did not work with Paycheck.

I did a weekend "pick-up" gig w/ J.P. I think it was around 1970. This is when he was,still,"clean-cut".(no "outlaw" look yet.) I remember it was central-north.(Mich./Ill.?) 'cause it was "cold as hell"( ). We were in a car, pullin' a trailer,& almost lost it a couple o' times, due to the slick roads. But,we made it,up & back, unscathed. John always wanted to sit behind my steel & pick it.

Leonard Bick from Ohio worked the road with Pay for awhile. This was right after Johnny's little "vacation" in Chillicothe.

Here's something different! I played a private gig in the sixties on lead guitar and guess who was on steel? Johnny Paycheck! He was living on the west coast at the time and playing local clubs. As I remember, he was a little messed up but actually played OK and was straight ahead country. Does anyone else ever remember him playing steel?.......JH in Va.

Jimmy Day also recorded some of Johnny's earliest sessions. Towards the end, I recorded a whole album which included the "Old Violin" song with Johnny. He was pretty messed up, did'nt have a major label deal at the time. The song was later released on a small custom label and I never got paid for that release. I believe Sonny Garrish also recorded with him during those years. I suspect alot of other players recorded with him as well. He loved everyones steel playing, especially Emmon's. Johnny told me Buddy was his favorite out of the lot. That says alot considering he worked with them all, |

The late Doug Mastin played with Johnny for awhile. I don't recall the years. I believe he started playing with him while he(Doug) was living in Houston(?). Doug told me the story of how Johnny sat down at the steel and played/taught him the kick off to JukeBox Charlie and a few other tunes the first time he gigged with him. |

I was playing in Shelby Montana in the middle eighties when they booked Paycheck. All I remember about the steeler was he had a pushpull that had been converted to all pull. Pretty good picker.

I'm certain that Doug Jernigan, Bobbe Seymour, Doug Mastin, Big Jim Murphy all toured and done shows with him at one time or another. Lloyd Green and Jimmy Day done recording sessions with him. Check out Lloyd's cut of "Jukebox Charlie," on his "Revisited" cd. Paycheck played steel guitar somewhat himself. I heard he was a pretty good steel player. He sure could sing a Country Song. I played steel with one of his cousin for awhile.
GOD bless!

That was probably right after you mentioned Jones being your favorite country singer.

I did one weekend with Paycheck back in 1986. It was while he was out on bond awaiting trial for the barroom shooting in Ohio. It was a highlight in my career. I love his music.
