I just saw Bob Hoffnar with the band Hem last night at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle. It was great hearing Bob as an integral part of this acoustic pop chamber ensemble. Hem is a well oiled music machine, and to my ears, the steel provided the lubricant which helped make the result sound effortless and extraordinary.
Bob's tone on Franklin d-10 and Guensey dobro was great, but what impressed me the most was that there was not a steel guitar lick to be heard in the performance, just a very creative musician playing just the right parts. It just happened to be that he was a steel player. Too many times our instrument is relegated to being a glorified musical saw. Last night Bob gave a master class in the creative possibilities of the pedal steel. And he didn't need to throw the instrument in the air to do it!

I realize its my own fault but i always hear about this stuff the day after it happens. As a beginner I wuld really love to see some people play this thing and possibly gain some insight...but i am totally out of the loop when it comes to the venues and bands this playing is presented in....
I will watch for Hem gigs in the future. |

Hem's music is beautifully interwoven. If I may coin an expression from Steinar, it's about expression as opposed in impression.
I've had the good luck to see Bob in many venues, and his mind is open to everything.
As a matter of fact, I probably saw him play for about a year & a half before I ever heard him play any country. Yeah, he does that too.
Bob can go from a fusion type jazz gig at "The Norweigen Seaman's Church", to raunchy country swing rockabilly at the dive "Hanks Saloon"......at the drop of a...hat....  |

I see Cincinnati listed among the October dates... Generally, I'm a hard core country boy, but I'd like to see Bob again and hear him play for the first time. Oh, he's played before, but I've never heard him.

too true Brian. Hard to find em when they are in town too. I need a lo-jack like device to tell me when steels are in a 50 mile radius. Mr. Tyack do you update your website? I would like to catch a gig some day. |

I'm playing this Thursday September 14th at Conner Byrnes in Ballard (Seattle) with Katya Chorover, a local singer songwriter. Good band, and folky music. There will be some country-ish music played.

Naw, I love country but I am just now discovering whats so great about it. My roots are in hard rock/punk so I wont be disappointed if you dont play "a way to survive". truth is I just love good music and good musicianship of all sorts....and my sources tell me thats what goes on at your gigs

Thanks, Orville, I was just about to mention that. By the way, I just found out that this gig is usually a jazz gig, so I'll bring down the pedal steel in addition to dobro and Weissenborn and we just might do some standards.

Hey -- I hate to further hijack this thread, but my wife Susan and I would love to see you play, Dan, in Ballard. We're planning on it. Folksy pedal is at the top of my likes, though I know your passion doesn't lay there.
