You were absolutely correct to restore it. The value to you has increased greatly; and that's what matters. This is much, much better than keeping it original and in the closet.
Mr. Clean would even consider playing this guitar.

When Nick was putting the diamonds back on the steel we found the date on the back of one of the diamonds. It reads 005-56-1775.
Jody, does that mean it was made:
May of 1956? |

Wasn't there a date under a tuning pan?
The pickup switch style indictes later than 56, probably 59.

No date could be found in the tuner pan pits of the body, just neck #'s (in red) & what looks like Mr. Leo's initials (LF) where he may have inspected them. The only indication of a date I could find was scratched on the back of the right side diamond plate for the front apron. It reads 005-56-1775.

Nick,
Since you have gone as far as you have, why not replate the metal parts and it will all look new.
Based on the condition of the guitar in the first picture, I would have done the same.

If the scale measures 24” you goofed putting it back together! It's supposed to be 24½”! Just kidding¡ I never cared about Originality over Better~Looks. I guess that's enough reason why I'm not a Collector! It looks great! Have fun with it! I'm sure that's meant for both of you! I hope you don't fight over who's turn it is to play on it!! Remember Nick, Linda gets first chances!

This am I called Don Randall at home in Santa Ana and asked hi some information with regard to serial numbers and he replied."I Forget Jody" and Jody forgets as well sorry.

Nick- That sure is a beautiful looking guitar. Linda will look good and sound great on it. I like those pickups and also those controls right handy on top as they should be for all steels.
Makes me almost want to go back to my D8 days, if I can remember all that 1950 stuff.....Merry Christmas....al
