First time playing out

Post by Terry Srader »

I took the plunge and just did it!! I played out for the first time at my church. What a rush....head throbbing, hands cold as ice, knees knocking.....all with the natural vibrato --- my hands were shaking so badly!!! Image

Thanks to b0b for giving an outlet where we can post, learn, etc, and thanks to EVERYONE here making the forum what it is today!! It's been a BIG help to us newbies to be able to "take the plunge".

Terry, each time you play out with a live band,no matter if it's a church or a honky tonk you WILL get better each time. You will learn more in a month playing with a live band, than a year woodshedding at home by your self.Just play out as much as you can,it works.

My first time out was in the "folk" choir at my church. It's a good environment to start out in. The "audience" is quiet, and no matter how badly you play, nobody is going to yell "You suck!" (although I've heard you're not a real musican till that happens) Anyway, I'm starting my second year at church, and I still enjoy it. Remember, the only reason to play the steel guitar is because you love it!

Terry, Way to go!! I played out for a second time Sunday at Church, during the offering. I was a bundle of nerves. I kept thinking in my head, I play for the Lord and he's heard me mess up many times Image
Everything went great.
I don't think the nerves ever go away.

Terry,

Just accept the fact that you don't have to play the song perfect. Nobody plays perfect...not even the pros. That's why recording studios require take after take after take. Just get by your first mistake and you will relax and finish in great shape. In fact I welcome the first "blurp" because then I know I not under the pressure anymore to play it perfect.

I remember the first time I played out, my foot was shaking so badly, I had to take it off the foot volume control. Image
