Cody, Melba can't remember so I'll try and dig it out if she still has a copy. She thinks it was on UA records. I know it wasn't Loyd cause he didn't play on her stuff til 68 or later.

Jack... I guess I was wrong then. (But I'd a sworn those licks at the end of the intro were 'signature Lloyd').

Steve... I have a pretty good mp3 of the the song, on my iTunes. The thing is I'm not on my home computer today, and can't put it up right now. I'll be sure to add a link here tomorrow afternoon.

Speaking of Johnny (Donny)... There a recent release on Koch records of Paycheck's early hits. The title is something like: JOHNNY PAYCHECK: "BEGINNINGS", The little darlin sounds of johnny paycheck. Record producer Aubrey Mayhew writes an insane account of how he 'discovered' Paycheck during a fan fair week in the early 60's.

It's a great CD. But the steel tone is just bizzare! The most toppy I've ever heard. But great playing for sure, and great songs. (Pick it up if you haven't yet).
[This message was edited by Cody Campbell on 23 August 2006 at 02:40 PM.]

Cody, Aubrey was insane. There was no fanfare in early 60's. it was DJ week aka Opry celebration then CMA. Some of those Early cuts of JP had Sonny Curtiss and the Jones boys. Pre my becoming Jones boy

Oh yeah, you're right, Jack. It was the DJ convention. That is what I meant to say.

According to what I've heard, it was a young Lloyd on the early Paycheck recordings.

Speaking of Paycheck with the Jones boys. Didn't he sing harmony on several of George Jones' songs. (Like the "The Love Bug"?)

Since I've heard the early paycheck stuff now, I've gone back and heard 'love bug' again, and it sounds just like him on harmony vocals.

Anyone happen to know which of those old songs (if any) that had JP on harmony?
[This message was edited by Cody Campbell on 23 August 2006 at 04:54 PM.]

JP sang harmony on a lot Jones's songs til Don Adams came along, Then Don sang on about everything after that even when he wasn't working for him. After the Billy Sherril era I'm not so sure. I only recorded on two albums with George in 67
and Don was brought in for the sessions.
George Riddle did some early stuff, but you can pretty well tell his stuff.DA had a super smooth voice and you can distinguish him as well. JP might be on The Race is on and You comb Her Hair and some others. I'll have to listen and research. He sang on quite a few

Here is a decent copy of "They bought the house next door".

It might take a few minutes to load.

Jack, I'd love to see those Frontier Ranch pics if you find them. I knew the place really well since my Dad, Tex Wheeler, used to MC a lot of the shows back then. I got to meet and pick steel on-stage with some of the greats back then. Special memories, for sure. (the backstage were pretty wild)

Jack,Mike, I would also like to see some of those Frontier Ranch pictures. I started playing bass there when Crawford was playing steel and switched to steel after he left. Mike,I remember your dad very well. He was a good man and a good friend. I bought my Fender 1000 out there from Gene Hoover, lead guitarist for Howdy Kemp. Roger

Cool pictures. I can't tell who's on steel in the bottom right of the Ray Price pictures. Is it Buddy? It doesn't look like him from that angle.

P.S. I am sure I was wrong about Lloyd playing on "They bought the house..."

I was listening to satellite radio the other day and heard "What kind of a girl" by Loretta Lynn. The end of the steel turnaround has almost the exact same lick.

Lately, I keep hearing things and finding out I was confused. Guess I don't have the ear I thought I did. Image
[This message was edited by Cody Campbell on 26 August 2006 at 04:30 PM.]

Doug , you get a star. Daryl McCall on Bass.
Is the Sho-Bud "E" is playing the one Drake returned to him that's in the hall of fame?
Maybe Cass could tell us or maybe Buddy.

Jack,
The steel that "E" played, which is now at the CMHOF,was a predecessor to the one pictured on your post. The one at the HOF didn't have metal endplates. It was solid wood, all the way around. "Buddie" had his name scrawled on the front of it. When Pete got it,he placed a hand-tooled leather "nameplate" over it.

Smiles, I remember seeing it for years in Pete's office with his name covering everything and I wasn't there the day he gave it back to Buddy so I wasn't sure what was underneath.I know Pete was proud to have owned the guitar Buddy played but he told me it would always be Buddy's guitar so he returned it to him

Excellent photos with real historic interest. Buddy and Jimmy both look so young, and were great players even then. Don Rich looks like a mere boy - what a talent he was too. The greatest duet harmony singer ever, as well as being a superb fiddle and guitar player.

Ken, No doubt about Don being a great harmony singer, But there are others to put in that catagory as well IE: Daryl McCall,Donny Young, and Don Adams. I'm sure someone else will wamt to add to this as well.
