Speedy West was on some of them and another guy who's name I can't recall now. I have the Bear Family cd with that info but not here at my desk right now.

No he didn't, at least not on those Capitol sides.
edit: ok, I checked and there were actually two other steel players Dave and Jack Carpenter and incidentally they were not related.

The only thing I have by Merrill is the Capitol 45 EP,which is supposedly, fairly rare. I guess I'll have to get the Bear Family set,if I want anymore by him. I always liked him. He was rockin' this stuff LONG before the "Killer". Sure would liked to have met him.
BTW,sure sounds,to me,like Speedy on steel. Back then,Cliffie Stone was, pretty much,in charge of the west coast Country division,(along w/ Ken Nelson) & used Speedy & Jimmy Bryant on everything.

Don't know if he recorded with Merrill or not but, he had a pretty hot steeler by the name of Joe Byers that worked the road with him along with a lead guitar player named Billy Riggs. I was led to believe that Joe was the steeler on "The House of Blue Lights" which was released around 1949 or perhaps in early 50s.

According to the discography/session details in the BF booklet first version of House Of Blue Lights was recorded on May 5th 1952 and the steeler was Jack Carpenter. In fact it was Merrill E. Moore's first recorded song for Capitol Records but this first version was never released and was lost. Another version of the song was recorded on July 16th 1953, again with Jack Carpenter on steel and this second version was the one that was finally released.

Thank you Jussi for setting the record strait. Apparently the musicians I referred to were his road musicians.
