In the Haggard you tube video, is Red Rhodes really playing or do you think it is pre-recorded? I sure like the tone on his Fender.

Thanks.

I think the clip you're talking about has Norm Hamlet on it.

Gary, as I mentioned on the earlier post on the youtube/Haggard question - Rhodes answer, which I only saw after first viewing this one, I suspect that they probably recorded tracks for the soundtrack rather than licensing existing tracks, as I understand it, it's a lot less hassle, at least back in 1966-67 it was.

I may be proven wrong of course, I have been meaning to get a copy of this film, at first I tended to ignore a lot of these as they're an exploito disgrace, but they also show such cool period footage, despite the total lack of respect for the genre and artists in some cases. (dunno 'bout this one of course, as I've not seen it to comment)

There are a lot of Haggard videos on YouTube. Please post the URL so we know which one you're talking about.

There's a TV clip of Hag with Red Rhodes doing Swingin' Doors on Youtube. I don't think they're playing.

Well from the clip Dave just gave of them singin' in the Haunted House....>there is of course a problem with the audio and video sinking up.....but it certainly sounds LIVE to me.>that's my opinion.

And Red had a diatonic tuning on that guitar.

Maybe you're right Ricky. I watched it again with the large screen format and I did see the guitar cords that time. Amps and backup singers are behind the curtain I guess.

That does look like Don Holloman playing bass for sure (or holding it). Red's on steel but that's not him playing it. The guitar player is Johnny Davis who is also a top notch steel player himself but he's always in more of a jazz/country vein ala Jimmy Bryant and I'd bet that's not him playing the track either. Looks just like they got some local musicians to "licksync" along with the recording. The only musician who was actually in Merle's band is Biff Adams who appears in the video!....JH in Va.

Yes, that is Don Holleman and Johnny Davis. Last I saw Holleman, he had the band at the Silver Dollar in Vegas, around 1980. Johnny Davis is and has been a monster on guitar and steel for decades. I think he's now in AZ somewheres, right?

Herb, the last time I heard ( 2 or 3 years ago), Johnny was living in ShoLo AZ. I haven't heard anything recently though.

That turn-a-round in the middle is definitely a lead guitar, but the very last part of it sounds like steel.

Oh yeah that's Johnny Davis and Don Holiman, Don' still out there pickin' as well, although I think he concentrates more on writing these days, he did have a regular Vegas gig through the 80s and 90s into the last few years.
Biff Adams is the drummer, these guys were all in Red's band the Detours in 1966, there's a good chance the footage is from that year, while Swinging Doors was a pretty good seller for Merle in '66, so one might presume the footage was filmed in 1966.

Biff joined Merle at the end of '69, the same time that Red's went with Michael Nesmith's band.
