The after tomorrow it will be one year since we lost Hal - a sad day to remember!
I have dug out one of those old obscure records from way back when (Kay Tolliver singing "New And Different"). Feel free to listen and remember the man...

| Hal was a great musician. His steel guitar playing was second to none. But I'll remember Hal not only for his talent but his great humor and the friendship we shared for many years. He was always there for a friend. He had many highs and many lows in his life but you could always count on a Hal Rugg smile when you would see him. I will miss him forever and think of him often. | I discovered Hal's playing probably alot later than most of you guys. I first heard him on one of KD Lang's records and knew right away he was the real deal. |

Hal was truly gifted with his creative genius on the instrument that we all love so much.....and what a friend to all players whether a seasoned veteran or a beginner.......He's truly missed by the steel guitar world....his influence on many of us will be treasured for many years to come....RIP my dear friend.......HAL HIGGINS

You're right, Bobby. It's hard to recall seeing Hal when he wasn't spreading joy with smiles, laughter and humor. This despite some pretty rough times the past few years.
Mike: I'm guessing the KD Lang tune was "Down To My Last Cigarette", which Hal did a killer instrumental of on his "Slidin' For Scale" CD.

| Great steel player and greatly missed. I get chills down my spine when I hear Hal playing on those Loretta Lynn records. I was blessed to be at the Texas show the last night he performed. That night was great and Hal was teriffic even though he was ill. He left behind many fans and friends. |

I too did not know Hal very long but he was a special man to me as well. I was at a jam that I had not business even trying to play and had only owned a pedal steel a few months and he came over and showed me some intros that he said might be handy. He did not care if you had been playing 15 years or 15 minutes he always treated you the same. He was a class act.
Regarding the "Down to my Last Cigarette" - I heard him tell a story about that song. It was way before K. D. Lang - he was on the road with a package show and had gone some place after they did the show and was playing - I think I remember this was in St. Louis - whoever the main guy in the act was said, "Come on Hal we have to be several hundred miles down the road by tomorrow" then Hal sain. "Oh I might just as well because I am down to my last Cigerette" I keep thinking Bill Anderson wrote that --- but whoever it was - Hal joked and said I gave him the title and did not get mentioned in the credits. The went on to say that he did make a buck or two playing it though.
There are millions of great Hal stories. Some were shaired at the convention in St. Louis last year too.

I'm glad that RFD tv is showing the old Wilburn Brothers show and alot of the shows is Hal playing. What a musician! He makes that O' Sho-Bud talk.

My earliest knowledge of the great Hal Rugg was when he was with the Wilburn Brothers television Show.
He played his distinctive E9 licks behind the vocals, but I was always waiting for his instrumentals that was always on the C6 neck.
Hal Rugg, an ICON of the steel guitar.
