During a break last night at the bar the jukebox (actually a behind-the-bar mp3 player so I couldn't identify which CD this was) played a Williams ballady number with some beautiful steel work. Very full-toned, spare playing, very in tune, tasteful as hell. My first thought was Greg Leisz, the above descriptions fitting him to a T, although I have no idea if he did any of her sessions. I don't know her body of work well enough to say if it was early, recent or what....
Anybody know? |

It's Doug Pettibone; he plays an Emmons. More than likely you heard a track from "World Without Tears" album, or if it was a live album, "Live @ the Fillmore".
Cheers!

Thanks Mark. I know Doug only by name, as Lucinda's guitarist. Had no idea he played steel. Yes, Emmons guitar would have been my first guess. Which is also consistent with my guess about Greg L. Couldn't tell if was the live album. If it is Pettibone, then my compliments to him. |

Brendan,
Not sure about Austin City Limits DVD....do you know what year it was recorded? Before the "World Without Tears" album she toured with Bo Ramsey on guitar. Depends on what year/album you saw her.

On her Sweet Old World album the steel is credited to Gurf Morlix, which is a name I am unfamilar with. |

Gurf and I played together with Billy Swan in a band called Buddy Hollywood back about 15-20 years ago here in L.A. He's one of those guys who can sing and front a band while playing lead guitar, mandolin, pedal steel,stand-up steel,Dobro or bass - and he plays them all real fine and tasty. He used to carry a file cabinet full of charts and lyrics on stage at club gigs and could play ANY request, knew all the standards, knew the most obscure songs AND their b-sides and could sing and play them on any instrument. He was playing Junior Brown's tuning and style on a Stringmaster before anyone ever heard of Junior Brown. Gurf moved to Austin some years back and is a well known producer now as well. He was Lucinda's band leader and producer at the beginning of her recording career.I still phone him up once in a while and see him when I'm in Austin. Check him out here: http://www.bluecornmusic.com/site/artists/gurf_morlix/ and here: http://www.puremusic.com/gurf.html [This message was edited by Michael Johnstone on 27 June 2006 at 08:49 AM.] |
