A week ago Saturday I was asked to fill in for a lead guitar player who was ill at a Hawaiian Luau gig and was pleased to find out that Kenny Dail would be coming up from North Carolina to do the gig with his old Ric Fry Pan. It was a fun job with a Hula Show in the middle of our two sets and all. Kenny made our sound and gets a lot out of that Ric. I've known Kenny for many years and we've been good buds but I'd never worked a whole night with him on lapsteel as he'd usually be on his D-10 Emmons. On the country stuff we did he nailed a lot of the pedal steel parts on his frypan. What was especially nice was that with Kenny and the bassman, I wasn't the oldest guy in the band for a change. Finally, kudos to Kenny Dail, a good friend, and great player as well as my "illegitimate dad".........JH in Va.

Kenny is the reason I have spent my whole
adult life making most of my living (if you
can call it a living) doing what I love.
When I was fifteen, he gave me free lessons
every Wednesday night on his triple neck
Fender. I learned three tunings at the
same time, which taught me intervals right
off the bat. More importantly, he would take me with him to his Friday night gig at Whichard's Beach and let me play the last
four or five songs of the night with the band. In a year or so of that routine, I
learned my basic steel guitar skills,
professionalism, and band etiquette (when the hell to lay out).
Kenny is one of the most knowlegable steel thinkers I have ever met. He remains my
mentor and friend.

Hi Vernon, You are also one of my heroes from those days. As far as I know Kenny's
only recorded output is on a CD he did with Tee Moroney when he was living in Virginia
and a guest spot on the new Don Helms/Chris
Malpass CD, "Turn Back the Years", which is
available thru www. malpass family music.

You guys are abslutley the best. Clyde always gives me more credit than I deserve. I am proud to know he holds me in such esteem and I am proud be included in his umbrella of friends and musicians.
Vernon, I am sorry that I dont have much recorded material so you can evaluate my playing ability. I asure you it will never exceed you excellent tone and talent.
Jerry Hayes and Glen Lanning are the reason I am still playing today. My impaired (sp)health does not give me the abillity to play in the bar circuit or do any weight lifting such as a session 500 and a D10 pedal steel. I am very fortunate to have friends like Jerry and Glen around to help me. I cannot thank you enough for your help.
Joe Smith is a very special person in my life too. He even let me sit in on his playing spot one time and we shared the same (his) tracks and also has help me lugging my stuff to and from the car. JOe, I am really enjoying your CD with the great C6th suff. Awesome!!!
I feel really honored to be able to call all you guys my friend. God bless you each and every one. Stay healthy and play as good as your talent will let you.
