Thanks for posting that, Jim-unbelievable!

As a newbie to pedals I learned something from that clip: I get the general impression that most good pedal players don't manipulate the bar much-because it is unnecessary to do so get your musical "point" across in most pieces, when you have access to pedals and knee levers.

I am used to moving the bar around a lot on the dobro, and somewhat less on the lap steel. But the trick stuff/showmanship in that video aside, the Maestro is moving that bar around a lot and lifting it off the strings.

Jim Sliff-I'm not hassling you with this next comment-so please don't take it that way-but your post is similar to statements I have heard when people are near me and they are watching someone like Jerry Douglas play the dobro. I know it is said in fun-but it sort of indicates that one might as well throw in the towel, because they will never be able to play like that.

Buddy Emmons of course is not mortal like the rest of us, so getting bummed out after seeing that video is not an option!

I take inspiration from this kind of stuff, because it means that someday with a lot of practice, I may have an outside shot as being about 1/20 as good as Buddy, which would probably make me a solid player!

I've picked desperately for 25 years and the best I can play woudn't even be a warm up exercise for BE. How come the diffences are so huge? If this was wightlifting BE would lift 100 tons and I 150 kilo.

*sigh*

Yep, no need for me to ever put up any more clips! This proves that Buddy is the living legend we all have always thought he was.

Oh yeah?!

I could play more steel when I was 21 than Buddy could when he was 12!

(But, somewhere along the way, I got "distracted", and he passed me. Bummer.)

Many of us remember the Convention back in the late 70s and early 80s -- back then it was truly THE BUDDY EMMONS SHOW (at least for me and all my gang).

Scotty would end the show most every year with Buddy -- last thing Sunday -- I wouldn't ever DREAM of leaving b4 hearing what he had to spring on us in his a capella, tour de force ending. He'd do a different one each year and it just kept getting better and better. One year he'd play the boppy riffing for a minute or so and then break into some cool Travis fingerpicking thing that would end with him slowly moving his bar back so that it sounded like a record being slowed down and then he'd wind it back up again. The bag of tricks has NO BOTTOM.

Thanks for letting us listen to this example and for the others that it conjured up -- at least in some of our minds.

There is but one Buddy Emmons.
