I toured the UK with slim in the early 1990s, and Jimmie was on that tour. So, by the way, was Harold Bradley and Andy Reiss (Time Jumpers).
Slim had another steel player at that time - but I've temporarily forgotten his name. I remember he had longish hair and spectacles, and I THINK it was 'Bob' something - sorry!
I did one Wembley Festival on steel with Slim, but Jimmie's shoes were a bit on the large side for me....

I used to play R.G. in a little band in a place called Driffield in E.Yorkshire U.K. in the late 50's early 60's. The W.W.2. Bomber base there was handed to the U.S.A.A.F for some cold war activities,(or so we all believed). There used to be one American there who used to sometimes sit in with our little band on his triple neck non-pedal steel guitar. His name was I think "Arkie Gray" and he used to tell us he played steel for Slim Whitman. Although he didn't call him Slim....it was another word!!!. Arkie told us he designed this particular guitar and the makers used to give him a new one every time a new version was released. Fact or Fiction?? we all believed him anyway and he certainly could play that thing. |

Thanks for the input. You could always tell it was Slim before he started singing from the steel guitar. |

Slim Whitman had a bunch of steel guitarists on his records over the years. He apparently loved the steel guitar. These steel players all played or recorded with Slim at one time or other: Pete Drake, Jerry Byrd, Jimmy Day, Dr. Ralph Sheets and not to mention others, and yes Jimmy Crawford did play ad did record with Slim in the 90's and I saw Johnny Cox on stand up steel with slim in the 80's at a big package Country Music Show in Springfield, MO. Johnny was acutally employed by Ernest Tubb at the time. Johnny sounded great on Slim's songs. Slim was great!
GOD bless!

I think Hoot Rains was in the early 50's sides by Slim on the Imperial label such as Indian Love Call, Rosemarie, Love Song of the Waterfall, etc. He seemed to play mostly single notes and did a single note octave slide lick from the five, (example) if you're in the key of C you'd play a G note on the 3rd fret of your E string and slide it quickly to the 15th fret and back again. Rosemarie has a nice single note steel ride in it which has a very basic but also very tasty at the same time feel to it and is very pretty in it's simplicity!.........JH in Va.

Allan said ... "Jerry West played a lot of the UK shows with Slim."
I now own the Fender 400 that Jerry West played when he did the UK and Australian tours with Slim in the 70's, and Slim told Jerry never to sell that guitar as it had the best sound of any steel he had ever heard, or words to that effect.
When Jerry upgraded to a D10 Sho-Bud a while later, that Fender sat in an attic gathering dust.
Luckily I recently managed to persuade Jerry to part company with the Fender and it is now once more sounding as sweet as it did when it accompianied Slim ... pity I can't play it well enough to do it justice! |
