How many are left?

Post by Jerry Horner »

Just wondering how many of the old non-pedal steel players are left. Back from the 40s, 50s & 60s. I am mainly refering to those who never went to pedals. Sorry I did'nt put that in here the first time.

I played non-pedal guitars for 15 years, beginning in 1945. Then I owned a couple of Fender 1000's for 14 years before I first played knee-levers after I bought a Sho-Bud.

When and what did you start on Jerry? Image

I also started non-pedal in 1945 and played non-pedal up until 1971 when I purchased my first PSG, which was a new Sho-bud Professional D-10, 8+4. I played the Sho-bud for 27 years and then went to a HWP Mullen (lighter) which I am still playing.

Herb Remington is still with us. He was playing with Bob Wills in the late 1940s. I believe he is around 80 yrs old.

Blackir Taylor is still playing, I think he started in the very late 40's. Hes a great player and great teacher, and a welth of knowledge. Tommy Morrell is still playing non-pedal, Im not sure when he started playing.

I've never heard Blacikie play without pedals, but I'm sure he's very good at it.

I started in 1948 with a 6 string Rick. Moved to a double neck Fender and also had a Magnatone Double Lyric. Started playing pedals in 1963, but I had a long hiatus of about 15 years that I didn't play. Am now playing a SD10 Millennium made by MSA that weighs 26 pounds on the floor.

I have to edit to honor a couple non pedal starters: Maurice Anderson started on a 6 string, and no one can overlook the great Al Marcus, a legend.

Don Helms tried pedals for a while. Then, everybody was askin' him where the ol' Gibson was,so he put up the pedal guitar,& dragged out the D-8 Gibson. A HAPPY DAY!

Then,there's steel legends,Billy Robinson,& Howard White.

A few years ago at Scotty's I saw my old friend Gene Fields (GFI Steel Guitars) do his set on the main convention stage on one of his guitars with no pedals at all and did a wonderful job. I was amazed as I'd never heard him play that way before and he was superb to say the least........JH in Va.

Deacon Anderson, Bobby Koeffer, Tom Morrell, Billy Robinson, are a few I can think of off the top of my head that are still around, as are a lot of players who started on non pedal back in the day and then went to pedals

Kayton Roberts, not only is he still playing non-pedal, he's even been playing on the same Fender guitar for 50 some years.

Blackie started with non-pedal and made the transition to pedals like most. Ive been seeing him for lessons fer about 3 years and switched to non pedal about a year and and a half ago and he is really good at non-pedal.
He even still plays slants on his GFI.
