I was thinking the same thing. In the last year or 2 we've lost Jeff, Hal, Jerry Byrd, Jimmy Day, Jimmy Crawford, Winnie, Speedy. Red Rhodes, and a few yeas back, Curly. Our community has really been devestated.
Winnie was one of my closest friends, and I think about him frequently.

We have suffered so much as steel players losing those great players. I have found out that steel players are definitely unique and like a close knit family. I just do not see that in other instruments. Losing those men makes me really appreciate the job they did and the music they left for us. They are greatly missed. |

Part of a letter I wrote to Bobbe Seymour about Billy Walker,
Bobbe,
If you think about all of the great Steel Guitar Players that we have lost in the past, I am sure that God thought it was time to bring up another fantastic Singer that would enjoy good steel music to join them. Billy is in his real world with others he loves and he will be looking out for you to join him one of these days. I am sure he and Buck have already visited and are working on a package gig.
Remember, on Gods timetable, years to us may only be minutes to him.
Think about the difficult decisions Billy will need to make now. Who will he have play steel on what song. What a fantastic selection of pickers and Billy is really excited about that:
Winnie Winston; Curly Chalker, Bobby Garrett, Bob White. Billy Braddy, Jerry Byrd, Zane Beck, Jimmy Day, Jimmy Crawford, Speedy West; Jeff Newman, Hal Ruggs, Billy Bowman, Gene Crownover, Jimmy Day, Big Jim Murphy, Gene O'Neal, Julian Tharpe, Tommy Roots, "Little" Roy Wiggins, Carl West and Bobby Boydd, Pete Drake, Danny Shields, Alvino Rey & Leon McAuliffe, Shot Jackson and I am sure I missed a lot of them.
We could have easily lost Bro. Herbie Wallace last month also. Thank God he is still with us. |

I feel HONORED to have at least met and talked to some of my Hero's, and find that they are or were kind, conciderate, and freindly, as are all of them that are still aroun and PICKIN'.i BELIEVE that they are looking down on us and giving us those pointers on how to pick what and push each pedal. Jimmy D,Jimmy C, Hal,Curley Shot,Jeff and all of the rest.....and thanks to Buddy & Buddy,LLoyd,Weldon,Paul,Russ,Smily,Randy,
Tommy,Mike,John,Herby,Roy and all of the rest of the great pickers for sharing thier talants and wisdom with us.
