I finally identified this song that has been playing on the great Jazz station WBGO in Newark, NJ (WBGO.ORG). It is by a singer Catherine Russell, and the song they're playing is 'The Late,Late Show' which has this great steel backing by T.C. Furlong. It is really cool to hear steel on a Jazz station. Does anyone know him or anything about him?

It sounds great and he's getting alot of airplay here in the NY metro area. I'm really proud to hear this song in another arena than we're used to.

T.C Furlong lives and breathes in the northern suburbs of Chicago. He's played quite a bit in the area and had a somewhat storied run with the Jump 'N The Saddle Band several years back. He posts regularly on the Forum. If you do a search, I'm sure you can find his email and he will tell you personally anything you want to know (within reason) about the recording.

Thanks, Ken

I just found a post from him about Bruce Springsteen that I had started, it's amazing how work travels with the help of the internet.

I was so psyched to hear steel in a Jazz format in a big market that I had to post this thread. Thanks, Craig

I love Catherine Russell's take on "The Late, Late Show". It's very remeniscent of the Dakota Staton/George Shearing version from the late 50's. And T.C., your playing on this song is inspiring. I thorougly enjoyed it.

Some may already know this, but "The Late, Late Show" is from Catherine Russell's debut CD called "Cat" which was released last month. All the songs are excellent and you Grateful "Deadheads" will appreciate Catherine's version of "New Speedway Boogie".

Keep on pickin'!

T. C. is also considered one of the most informed
and pro engineers in this forum,
So I wouldn't be surprised if he engineered the session too,

If not he will still have all the info about how he recorded the track.

T.C. also plays some great psg on Claudia Schmidt's CD "Midwestern Heart" which includes one of my all time favorite songs, "Vampire". Claudia's singing and T.C's playing on this song will send chills up your spine for weeks.

Keep up the great pickin', T.C.!

Keep on pickin'!

Jim, My checkered past continues to haunt me. Yup, I admit that I produced and played on The Curly Shuffle. Nyuk, Nyuk.
And thanks guys for the nice words. Interesting story about the Catherine Russell session. I walked in and the producer says "so I'm thinkin' sort of a Joaquin Murphy, maybe Vance Terry approach on this tune, what do you think?" It sure was fun playing with a TOTALLY swingin' band. David, the engineer was my good friend Mike Knopka (a fantastic engineer...The Kinks, Ray Davies)

Cool. I have heard the Curly Shuffle... LOL

This new cd sounds right up my alley.
Where can I find it on the net.
I would love to hear your playing too.

Now if we can only get Big E. and Diana Krall together for a session.

Actually, I still like to revisit about half of the tunes on that Jump In The Saddle Band LP on my "Swingin' West" radio show every now and then. T.C. did some nice work on there. Actually, T.C. and Diana Krall will be just fine. His playing is right up on top as far as I am concerned.

Man this is good. I'm not much of a Country fan and this kind of music is right up my street. I agree, Diana Krall would sound great with some good C6th steel. Now I gotta buy this CD.

T.C. Great job, I love the tune
and the wonderfully off-the-wall solo.
That last 2 measures are killer,
and very clean.

Fine comping behind, like laid back horns.

Oh yeah the lady can sing up a storm too.

T.C. sent me a few clips he has worked on and they are real cool, up alot of ya'll's alley, maybe he'll post them here.

If more producers hear his kind of backup, we'd be hearing lots more of steel on other types of music, which makes me think of what B.J. Cole has been doing.
