I'm listening to John McGann's new CD. a compilation of several live perfromances with 3 different groups. John is playing guitar and mandolin on the CD, not steel.
John is new to the steel, and has not yet honed his skils on it to the degree that he has on the other instruments, but I gotta tell you, the man is absolutely brilliant. I'm pretty jaded, but he blows me away with his virtuosity.
The day will come when when John's skill on the steel matches his skill on his other instruments, and when it does, look out.
He's going to be one of our best players and brightest stars. Just wait.

That would make at least two (G). Of course, the other one makes you wait A YEAR for his next CD, but still.
There is nothing like that feeling, hearing real genius you didn't know existed, that marriage of technique and the unfathomable.
I can't wait to hear what he does on steel. Thanks for telling us about him. |

Whoa...I just dove under my bed...it is a wonderful thing to feel such support and appreciation, but first: I ain't no genius! I am just a music lover having a great time playing and stealing ideas from as many places as I can. I'm a better thief than i am an innovator!
As for my steel playing...at this point there are just not enough hours in the day for me to catch up with the many years I've put in on guitar and mando. I LOVE the steel, both pedal and non-pedal, as much as the other instruments I play, but the fact is I didn't own one until I was 30, and started playing guitar when I was 8... so I reckon I'd have to quit everything else and practice whole hog for a decade or so to even approach the amount of ability in Mike Perlowin's or Rick Schmidts pinky toe! (Two of my heroes on the instrument!) When I think of being compared to guys like that, or John Hughey, Paul, Buddy, Lloyd etc. I want to crawl back into the egg.
With the amount of stuff I am doing at the moment,including being a family man, I will not rise above hack status for quite awhile. And that's OK, because I am really enjoying the ride. As a teacher, it is easy to share the frustration of students when you are one yourself!
I love discovering new things on the steel, and if I can carve out enough 'shedding time to get anything halfway competent together, I'll be happy... and smarter!
Mike, you da man!!! Now stop it!
