I hope this is in the correct part of the forum. I apologize if not and please point this in the correct direction. In 1981, I was involved in a nasty motorcycle accident. I was young in my twenties but both knees really took a pounding travling over the bars when I hit the lady broadside. My right was reconstructed the old fashioned way (prior to Arthroscopy) and has held together really well. My left has been had several issues and has been scoped twice.
Today I was told by my Orthopedic Surgeon that I need the Unicompartmental Knee Replacement. I am curious if there are others here who have had serious knee ailments and or replacements and what your outcome has been? I am at a cross roads of sorts and I have to be honest; I am a bit shook up over this. Not over going under the knife, because I have done that, it's the long term. I sure would appreciate any insight on this. Thanks guys/gals.
Sincerest regards,
Stephen Raulston |

Hi Steve, I have heard that with great advancements made in knee replacement technologies, it is actually easier to rebound/rehab from that procedure, than the injury I had about 2 and a half years ago:Ruptured Patellar tendon/reconstruction wherein it took several months working to even bend the leg again. You have my sympathies and keep us posted. |

Hi Steve, my replacement has somewhat been different to yours if you kindly look at my website main page, but I'm still here and continuing to pick although in the initial days seven or so years ago it was really difficult just to sit at my steel, until the rib cage "knitted" together. I'm sure with a positive attitude as I'm sure you have, you'll come through anything that is thrown at you. I did!!

Steve,I have had total knee replacement in both knees.Recovery time was about 6 months with the first one and about 4 months with the second one.I consider this a new lease on life! It is so wonderful to live pretty normally without that horendous pain!!!
I have enough mobility to play pedal steel and use all pedal and knee levers.
You may E-mail me direct and I will try to answer your questions
Go ahead and get it over with! |

Thank you everyone for your replies. It had really gotten me down thinking about my body going south. You know the old adage "if I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself. It rings true here because I was pretty hard on my body when I was a young man.
The replies here have really encouraged me and I hope I can meet you guys at the Convention this year. I think I will opt to have the surgery in the late fall, so I have awhile to ingest all this information and prepare myself for the knife.
One last question. The doctor tells me the Uni-compartmental is basically like a band-aid for my knee. In other words; it will only last for approximately 12-15 years at most whereas a full knee replacement will last 25-30 Are there any here who also had the same choices? Thank you again guys and for those who celebrate Easter; Happy Easter!
Best regards,
Steve |

Steve I didn't read all your respones I'm sure they are supportive, when I was a teen I saw Def Leppard in conncert and I loved it, however I loved the show VH1 behind the music better when they talked about the drummer losing his arm and the band still stood beside him he had to reteach himself and so on, he didn't give up hang in there! |
