| Two really pretty songs on the Jerry Byrd Fan Club site as of right now. I don't know what they are as I don't speak Hawaiian nor do I understand what THEY are saying. Just love to hear them sing. |

Jack is correct.
This is an old song heard often in Hawaii.
Hanalei is on the North Shore of Kauai.
Ray, the name of the vocalist "Bill Nina" on the web-site should be Bill & Nina, or Bill Kaiwa and Nina Kealiiwahamana, a popular singing duo from the past. Both are still alive and still perform on rare occasions such as in this photo I took of them at the Moana Hotel's 100th Anniversary.

Derrick a very special thank you for the photo and the proper names invovled here. I got it from a hand-me-down tape and just first names were scribbled down on the cassette. I'm happy to get it and to be able to play it and mostly, to share with the rest of you.

| Jerry sounds great on this song as he did on everything he ever recorded. Nina has to be one of Hawai'i's great Treasures...(IMHO)...who could be heard weekly on Hawai'i Calls and later was the leader of the revised (Bill Bigalow) Hawai'i Calls series. A truly beautiful person with an equally beautiful voice. FYI: Nina sang at Jerry's memorial service last April and brought tears to many eyes. |

Ray,
I just found a rare album with Jerry playing steel. The album is called Sandy Bell in Hawaiian Paradise. Sandy is the vocalist who is backed by an all star Hawaiian cast.

I knew SANDY BELL who lived in the Lahaina area and played at the Peacock many years ago, often with George Paoa. He was a fine guitarist, played those smooth "city slicker" chords. Sandy had an almost Pua Almeida quality to his singing voice. His wife, Leila was an excellent hula dancer. Sadly Sandy lost both of his legs, probably through diabitis...(I never found out), and eventually passed away. He often played with a group which included Ed Sailer,(bass); 'Sonny' Nicholas,(steel); and Don Paishon on uke or guitar. I've lost tract of Ed and Don ... anyone know if they are still with us ? To my knowledge, that lp with Jerry playing steel is the only one Sandy ever produced. It's a very nice album.  |

Keoki,
I saw DON PAISHON several years ago on Maui, playing at the Pacific Beach Resort Hotel in Lahaina.
He invited Warren Slaving and myself to play our steel as guests on his show. He was playing rhythm guitar and singing with a trio at that time.
When the hotel workers heard the steel being played, they all came out to give a listen. I guess they had not heard the steel played in so many years, that they wanted a chance to come out and listen.
For those who do not know, Don Paishon was on the Hawaii Calls program.
