A couple of years ago, when I was getting into pedal steel, I heard an album by swedish jazz clarinetist, Per "Texas" Johansson. On his album was pedal steeler Johan Lindström. I think he was playing on his E9 neck.
I loved his playing; very tasteful phrasing, and beautiful flowing voicings. If any of you Swedish steelers (or others) out there can point me to more of Linström's work, or tell me anything about this fine player, I would be most grateful.

Personally I've never heard of Johan, but I'll send a message to Sweden's foremost steel picker, Janne Lindgren, and ask him to help you if possible. After all there are some 350 steel pickers in Sweden and I know very few of them.

Sorry, Tim - Janne Lindgren tells that Johan lives in Stockholm but he doesn't know his e-mail address and have no further info about him either. Maybe the best you can do is to track him via the records he's done, like Jan hints. There are 394 Johan Lindström in Stockholm's phone catalog so he's hard to pin.

Thanks for the replies, Anders and Jan. I look forward to finding out more about Lindström.
I get the umlaut (is it called that in Swedish?) by pressing my A + C pedals together, kicking my left knee half-vertical lev... er, rather, option-U, then the vowel I want to put it over.

Aha - you do like we do to write a so called german y, ü. Smart!
Umlaut sounds german to me and I've never heard that word before. We have one key each for å, ä and ö, so we have to spell a brutally shaved swedish when we are abroad and mail home. Some people use aa for å, ae för ä and oe for ö in such situations.
But your idea of a pedaled keybord is brilliant! |
