What tuning is he using?

| I seem to remember a picture of Jimmy Day playing a 4 neck Fender with Elvis. Could this be Jimmy playing it with a pedal? Looks like his hands. They also could be lip syncing to studio recording. |

Ah....ok. Yes--I've seen this footage on TV. I wondered the same thing. I'm seeing what at first I thought was just a light reflection up at the tuners. But it is timed to what would be pedal pulls. This is a place where people were rigging pedals back then. Could we be seeing some "coat hanger" action here?
These old Opry compilations are notorious for cutting in footage from other sources and that was my first thought because we are certainly hearing stuff that we are not seeing the player do with his hands. But now I'm thinking that we are seeing a pedal steel stringmaster. |

| Jimmy Day had such a great touch that he could sound like pedals on a non-pedal guitar. I think "Crazy Arms" was recorded in 1956 so It is most likely Jimmy was using pedals. Jody. |

Van Howard was doing the harmony vocals. Jimmy introduced me to him at a Bush gig in Texarkana years ago. He quit the music biz early and became a banker. Heck of a nice man.
Fer sure it was Tommy Jackson and Dale Potter on the fiddles.
I looked at the steel player's hands and I don't think it was synched. He was playing the correct positions for the Bud Isaacs E9 tuning, without the G# or chromatic strings.

My guess is Jack Evins. He worked with Price and played a quad Fender with pedal(s) added.
He can be seen playing the guitar with Price
on one of the Gannaway Grand Ole Opry shows
filmed in the 50's.

| There's another Price video ("Soft Rain") on the same page with Jimmy Day playing. Notice that Jimmy uses a lot more vibrato for expression than the player on the "Crazy Arms" video. Small hand movements can say a lot! |

Very true about the technique. I picked that up right away and was almost sure it was not Day. It does not sound like that way Day played it.
I just wished they would have shown the face.
