Saw Jimmy Day backing Willie Nelson and Tracey Nelson on Pop goes the country on RFD-TV last night. Could swear Jimmy was only using a thumb pick, no finger picks. His nails were long and pointy. Anyone know for sure? Anyone else just use thumb picks?

I can play with just a thumb pick but you cain't get the tone without them. I think if Day was playing with his finger nails he would tear one off sooner or later and that would not be very constructive to his playing.

Last year when I was visiting with Russ Hicks in Dallas he was telling about when Buddy Emmons was cutting tracks on "Nameless Shuffle". Laney had wrote words to this and used Buddy in the studio. Russ told me that Buddy tracked once using picks. After listening to it he then went back in and cut another track using only his fingers. Not even a using a thumb pick if my memory serves me right. I've got the CD and I'll tell you it's increible what Buddy did. Great picking. Beautiful tone. What a master!

I saw that show and I thought he was using those sharp pointed Banjo picks. Russ Hicks was wearng them at the show in Dallas.

I am with Howard also.Since i had read this thread before i saw the show, i was watching
real close & when the light hit just right you could see it glisten off of the chrome from the picks.He had picks on from what i saw - small but they were on there...Ron |
