Hi!
Tift Merritt is playing here in Oslo in April, and does anyone know if she is currently touring with a steelguitar player?
Greg Readling is playing some very nice pedal steel on her debut cd Bramble Rose, and if he is touring with her now, I could try to get in touch with him for a quick lesson while he is in town.. Maybe someone has got his email adress here as well?

Hi, Frode, I've seen Tift several times recently, opening for Elvis Costello, and she had gone over to a more "rock" presentation, no steel to be found. Hope she brings some your way- steel sounds GREAT in her music.

Hi Frode,
Tift's band had some big personnel changes in moving from "Bramble Rose" to "Tambourine," her 2004 followup CD. Greg Readling, a former steel student of mine, left the band during that transition. You might be interested to learn that: (1) Greg now plays upright bass in a popular band in central North Carolina called "Chatham County Line" and (2) he recorded the steel parts to"Bramble Rose" on a beautiful looking and sounding Sho-Bud Lloyd Green steel. It's too bad that Greg won't be on the upcoming tour and that Tift Merritt no longer has a steel player on her live shows.

Hi!
Thanks for the info!
I kinda figured she would come without pedal steel.. The latest cd does'nt have any on it.. I just love the stuff Readling does on the Bramble Rose cd..
The Chatham County Line actually played some gigs here in Norway this christmas as a backing group for Norwegian songwriter Jonas Fjeld.. I did'nt have the chance to og to see them, but I have been told that the shows were great!
I really like the Thad Cockrell cd "warmth & beauty" Greg is playing steel on as well…
I am actually planning a trip to Usa with my gilrfriend this summer.. We'll be spending aprox two weeks in the States, starting in Nashville, and then driving to New York City and via NC and Virgina.. Would Raleigh be nice place to stop by maybe? And maybe I could pick up a lesson or two by the guy who tought Greg to play as well?
That would be great !

Hi Frode,
Greg moved some time ago and I haven't seen him lately, but the next time I do I'll be sure to pass along your kind words. Some of us got a chuckle from the fact that the only steel heard on Tift's Tambourine CD was played by Robert Randolph -- quite a compliment for Greg to be "replaced" by RR!
I wasn't aware of Chatham County Line's touring schedule and I'm glad to know that you saw them recently. If I recall correctly, CCL consists of some musicians Greg played with in an earlier band, Stillhouse, which then morphed into Tift Merritt and the Carbines.
Your trip to the U.S. sounds great! Musically, I see Raleigh somewhat as a "hit and miss" city; there are many good-to-great venues but you just have to time things right to see who/what you want. Speaking of timing, I'll be traveling a lot in July and August but if our schedules mesh, I'd be happy to meet and talk/teach pedal steel. Why don't you email me directly a little closer to the time of your trip?
Thanks again for your interest.

I think Greg Readling was in Tift's first video called "Virginia, No One Can Warn You", playing his Sho-Bud LDG. When I saw Tift on a show on tv a few years ago, Greg was playing steel and singing backup with her. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10 |

Tift has former guitarist of Ryan Adams, Brad Rice now touring with her on Lead Guitar.
Her show on Austin City Limits recently had no steel, but on the other half of the show, Ryan Adams had Jon Graboff playing some tasty stuff.
