I got to hear a sneak preview of Keith's new CD today, and let me tell you there is some good stuff on it. If you like good ole hardcore E9th country, do yourself a favor and pick this up when it comes out. Look out all you Texas players, these Missouri hillbillies around here are cranking out some things that might rival what you all are playing down there |

Jack -- I resent that! There's hillbillies everywhere that rival them damn Texans! Don't give them so much credit...

In these days of political correctness, you should refer to us as "Ozark Americans" .
The singer on the album is "Gary Atkinson" whom I worked with in Branson for 2 years. He is great. Some of you heard him at the Kansas Jam last year.
I wrote one of the songs on the album and can't wait to hear the final mix.

Thanks for the kind words Jack. It means a lot coming from a great player like yourself.
The CD contains 10 new songs written by guys who love steel guitar. Really this isn't, "my", CD, it is a CD from a bunch of guys who love steel guitar. I did play all the steel guitar on the CD, but I consider myself only a small part of the whole project. I was warned before I started this project that all 4/4 shuffle tunes would not sell. In the process of making the CD, some friends advised to, "swing", some songs. I know that you can't please everyone, because music tastes nowdays are varied. Your best bet is to play what you love. In that respect I admire the Bluegrassers. They don't care what others think, they just know what they like. The material on this CD is what we used to hear out of Nashville. It is the kind of music still alive and well in Texas. It is the kind of music my friends Bobby Flores and Jake Hooker play. It is my dream that Bobby Flores, and all my Texas friends, do their version of these songs on their own CD. I would like nothing better than to hear someone say, "Dicky Overbey played better steel guitar than Keith Hilton did on that Gary Atkinson tune". To be honest, I had quit listening to music until Bobby Flores and Jake Hooker started making CDs. Their music is like a breath of fresh air. No longer was steel guitar religated to a muddled mix of midrange mud you can hardly hear. With Bobby Flores, Jake Hooker, and Keith Hilton, steel guitar and fiddle do all the fill work behind the singer. Steel guitar and fiddle are not lost in the mix, they come on powerful. The most important person in my project has been Terry Bethel. Without Terry's knowledge and help in the studio, this would not be a geat CD. Tomorrow we finish the CD in the studio by adding the harmony singer. Our harmony singer has his own big show in Branson, Missouri. Yes, I hope our hard work impresses everyone, but most of all I hope it impresses Bobby Flores and all my friends in Texas. |

I might as well be perfectly honest. Bobby Flores and I had talked about working on a new CD project. The CD done in Branson was supposed to be the demo CD for the new songs for Bobby to work from. Realizing that Bobby is a perfectionist we hand picked special musicians, and a director who is also a perfectionist--Terry Bethel. All the people involved in the project knew the CD was headed to Bobby Flores. To be honest, I think the musicians on the Branson CD wanted to out shine Bobby's band in Texas. Friendly competition from people who respect each other's work. In doing our recording sessions in Branson, our CD took on a powerful life all it's own. Bobby has not heard any of the work yet. I e-mailed Bobby and told him our band may just blow his band away. I love Bobby's band and his singing, but we have a killer group also. So it may wind up that there will be our version of the CD, and the Bobby Flores version of the CD. In other words, 2 CD's. I personally think this friendly competition would be good for CD sales. Especially if we could get THE MAN-Ray Price to judge the final 2 CD's, and the winner of the friendly competition. I can guarantee one thing: Bobby better bring out all the "TOP GUNS" in Texas if he wants a better cut on his CD. People like John Reynolds, Allen Chapman, Randy Reinhard, Rick Price, Jake Hooker, Tommy Detamore, Jim Loessberg, Justin Trevino, Gary Carpenter,Phil Dalmolin, Jerrad Green, Jerry Blanton,DICKY OVERBEY,Reggie Rueffer, and John Schattenberg to name a few. Also, bring John Terry's fiddle. We have the "TOP GUNS" in Branson. Maybe these 2 CD's should be called the 4/4 shuffle-fiddle, steel Show Down at the OK Corral. |
