This is for guys who play a single neck or universal steel. Have you ever started setting your steel up in a club and the club owner comes over and enquires "Why just a single neck???" or why so few pedals??? in the case of those of you with an extended E 9th. I play Universals and the times this has happened even from the members in the audience, and then when in my case I "try" to explain about the missing "D" string comming back with a knee lever and lowering my E's giving me a 6th tuning like a double neck, and the look of bewilderment on their faces??? Lol. Serves them right for asking. Actually God bless them, they are just curious. One lady once came up and said "Is that like a kinda piano???" The mind boggles

yes ..Good for you !

I had a guy ask me why I don't play an "Emmerson"..

as every other Steel player that plays in his club plays an "Emmerson"...

I said oh..I think you mean Emmons..
he said yeh maybe..I think so...

and then I said..
I did and I do..
I had mine with me last time we were here....but I prefer this one.....

that being my 04 Carter D10

the other being an 86 Legrande D10..

I'm amazed that some folks even notice at all..quite amazed..and pleased...

Actually not, but I would love that to happen. I live closer to the north pole than to the american country music belt, and over here steel guitars are about as common as UFOs, and peaople have no idea what it is or how it functions.
I play an extended E9/B6 with string 9, D, still there 'cause I missed it too much when I played a S 12 universal. I use it all the time for 7:ths and love to hear it sing in unisone with string 10 when it resolves in the new chord after the 7:th. I simply can't play without that D string.

Yes, occassionally when I set up my S12U someone, usually a musician, will ask why I don't have two necks like other pedal steels they've seen. I explain that I have extra strings, and that the two necks are combined in one big "universal" neck. Then I show them the two different sounds from the one neck.

When this happens, I suggest that you ask them to watch those guys with two necks, and see how often they use the extra neck and all those pedals. They can watch my right knee and see that I use the other mode frequently.

Setting up at Cactus Petes in Jackpot, Nevada, the girl singer from the group ahead of us saw my Zum SD12U and said "Oh look, a baby steel".

Several years ago I was playing a show and after it was over a steeler came up to the bandstand.I was pleased when he asked about the number I had played on the bottom neck. When I told him it was a universal he just had to see it up close! He had no idea such a guitar existed.

Looking at it from the D10 angle --- I have had people ask me "what's the other neck for ???"

Dale, the saying is "E9 is the money neck. C6 is the fun neck." Don't know where it came from. Your version was...um...funny.

When I had an LDG, I'd tell them "Someone stole my other neck" or "I left it out back last nite and it had a second neck then!". I have the most fun trying to explain steel who 9 out of 10 times calls me a keyboard-player. J.C.

Happens all the time. The best answer is just to play each neck. Play some traditional country styles on E9, play some jazz on C6. Asked and answered.

Hi me again. Once somebody asked if it was a Zither!!! Another time an agent's blurb on one of his promo's about our band said "featuring Micky on piano" Another time a guy said "Isn't that "thing" usually surrounded by a wooden frame??" Guess he thought it was an Organ. The mind boggles!!!
