Hello all,
With only a few hours of the year remaining I was reflecting on the various highs and lows of the past 12 months.
Lets be positive and happy and post the good things.
The great things for me were,
Visiting Dallas for the first time and meeting all my heroes.
Getting a Zum
Being at the Irish PSG convention and spending time with old and new friends.
puschasing our tickets for nex year's jamboree at Dallas.
Advancing my playing(a little)
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year.

Buying my first brand new steel in 22 years.
Convincing myself that changing from a D10 to an S12U is not traumatic.

I found a bootleg of Jerry Garcia playing steel with The Grateful Dead on a live version of "Looks Like Rain" from the Empire Pool, Wembley, England, 1972.
That was just last weekend so it sticks out in my mind.
I got into some great improvisational jammin' with some local Jam Bands this year, with 2 more booked in Jan '06.
Steel fits in so great in that setting!

This year is the year I finally started playing steel. The best year of my life!
Then playing my steel at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco after only playing the steel for a month. Sounds scary, huh? |

This is the year I got serious and hired a teacher, now this thing is starting to sound like a pedal steel guitar, sort-of, once in a while. That makes me happy.

1. Restarted playing (although circumstances were due to a left-hand condition that wiped out by guitar career, I'm really stoked with steel).
2. Discovered that I'm attached via heart and soul to Fender 400's and 1000's.
3. Through conversations via email with Sneaky Pete, discovered the copedent that immediately "clicked".
4. Found this place and met you fine folks.

Joined this great forum in January. Bought my GFI and ZB. Learned more about playing steel than the last 27 years combined, I believe.
Survived countless Randolph and Garcia threads.
What more could one ask for? |

| Getting a box from Mr. Seymour with my new custom color GFI enclosed. That along with the fine people I have met who have gone to great lengths to help me in this adventure. Oh, and it was a pretty good moment when my Carter Starter sold for 722 bucks on ebay. That was a pleasant surprise......James |

Being able to get my old Professional rebuild by Duane and Jeff.
Meeting them and ALL the great guys in Nashville.
Getting fired from a band for my "Attitude" just like the "old days".
Getting paid for every gig I did without taking any money out of any band's tip jar.
Knowing that now it is alright to spend three hours a day learning the Telecaster™ without thinking that I am "spreading myself too thin".
Being able to learn what it is about playing live that I like. Being able to meet and visit with Lloyd Green regularly, as well as my perpetual friendship with Bobbe Seymour.
Top it all off with my day job being back over 40k, and all my weekends pretty much full of paid gigs with a band I like, and keeping my old australian sheperd Bill up and walking, made it a pretty good year.

2005 was my first year of playing live gigs, did about 90 my first year, some were fun some were not,,some paid, some didn't,,got a ways to go,,but i'm a whole lot better than i was this time last year.

2005 for me has been "Steel Guitar re-discovery year"
I got rid of my last steel around 5 - 6 years ago, but for the past 3 years have been toying with the idea of building another. However, because it's such a time consuming, labour intensive project I never really did get off the ground with starting the build. Instead, a couple of months ago I parted with a wedge of readies for a "ready to play out of the box" Fessenden.
So now, I'm back down there starting that uphill climb again and every now and then I make some steel guitar sounds a bit like how they're supposed to be !
What else this year ? Oh yes, staying at the same B & B as Billy and Ann Murdoch in Drogheda for the Irish Steel Festival in October, making our first visit to the Irish steel festival and now looking forward to more steel "stuff" in the follow-on years.
Well,(over here in the U.K.) there's less than 4 hours left of 2005, so I must go now and get busy on the Fessy !

| Well, here in 05' its been up and down. KATRINA really messed everything up here in south Ms. but it's behind us now and 06' looks bright. I guess my favorite parts of 05' were meeting a lot of different players, especially on the Gulf Coast and joining the DSSGA in Gulfport. I never worked the coast areas very much playing music. Playing the Gulfport steel shows really put me in a position to meet a lot of steel players I had never had the chance to be around mainly due to my playing almost every weekend. I'm sure I'll forget some names but here's some of the guys I've made new friendships with and a few that I had met before.> Bill Stafford, R.J. Buras, Danny Harrell, Buck Grantham, Roy Ayres, Ivan Readington, Royce Tarver, Pee Wee Whitewing, Hal Higgins, Greg Blackwell, Randy Blackwell and Gary Miles to name a few. Another highlite was playing shows with John Hughey, Mike Johnson, Joe Wright and Don Helms. My plans for 06' include meeting even more players, especially the folks at CARTER STEELS, Ann, John and Bud. The Dallas show is on my list also in Mar.06'. |

Well, this past year had some highs, and lows.
I guess one of the best was meeting, and getting to play a few gigs, including tonights NYE gig with the great Mike Young.

| I would say seeing Paul Franklin at the Texas show would be a highlight for me. The greatest highlight was getting to see Hal Rugg, Randy Beavers, John Hughey and Paul Franklin playing a one hour set at the Texas show. With the loss Of Hal Rugg this year I hope I never forget that night when those four men tore it up. |

Aside from that, the steel guitar highlights of my year were:
1- Hearing Reece, David Wright, and J.D. at Jim Palenscar's concert.
2- Hearing Al Vescovo at his regular thursday gig.
3- Picking with J.D. and Jim Baron and Rick Schmidt and Mark Switzer and a bunch of other people whose names I can't remember at the L.A. jam.
4- Picking with Jim and Al and Pete Grant and David Phillips and Bobby Lee and Bill Llewellyn and a bunch more people whose names I can't remember, at Bill's jam in San Jose.
5- Spending an evening with Bill and his lovely wife and daughter when I was travelling through the bay area last summer.

I was able, at age 71, to entertain nursing homes and alzheimer units 156 times in 2005.
I feel very priveleged and blessed to be able to share the beautiful music of a Steel Guitar for people who appreciate it beyond belief. My cup runs over and I encourage everyone with the talent to play the PSG to share it with others who will enjoy your talent immensely.
Don't be bashful, they'll love you for it! and your time giving of yourself. |

After playing for 56 years I finely got started on my very first Steel Guitar CD. It should be finished in about 2 months but it will not be for sale although some of my steel playing buddies will get one.

I’d say my new Derby PSG would have to be the best positive thing that happened for me all year, besides being able to sell a few things through this Forum in order to help make it possible! If I could have a wish~list, making an instrumental CD would probably be at the top! In the meantime, my own home~recordings will have to do for now! My 2nd. wish might be for a ‘real’ Baritone~Uke, instead of the ‘$60 Toy’ that I’ve been using for about 10 or 12 yrs.! BTW: I just received my 1st. Highlight for ’06! I got a fill~in job for Sat. Jan. 7th. after a 6-yr. down-time! Things are l©©king up your old address¡ [Edited 01/08/06 to correct the 1st. Highlight of ’06. The 1st. Highlight was Same~Ole, Same~Ole¡ Job cancelled at the last minute!]
