Newbie…

Hi ya, you’all. I‘m Jack Knight from San Diego, checking in for the first time.

I finally got around to sending my $5.00 check into Bob. I mean, Hey, that’s five bucks I could spend toward a new steel on E-Bay. I have been lurking around for quite awhile and figured it was time to join.

I have met many of you, either a Waikiki or this last Joliet meeting. I want to thank those that went out of their way to make us feel welcome. I have to blame Rose Vogt for getting me interested in this organization. We are members of the same Hui (Hawaiian Club) in San Diego. It was great to meet her brother in Joliet (small world). Yes, I‘m in the Joliet picture…I’m the bearded guy in the top row taking up two spaces.

Skill level on the steel? From one to ten: I’m a two, ok ok, maybe a two, but I am taking two lessons a week to get to the three level. I was so impressed with the performances at Joliet. Wow, you all make it look real easy.

I’ll be back here, lurking in the background, enjoying the info and the humor.

As you have already found, there is no tighter fraternity of musicians than steel guitar people.

I'm new too and probably -5 at playing

Lessons ? Non-pedal ? Where ? I'm in Southern California-Lake Forest) and I think it's fairly hard to find live instruction. I know there is someone in Long Beach but I think it's pedal steel.

Anyway I was just curious

Welcome Jack and thanks for the help on finding the lyrics to Hawaiian songs. I too am probably a two on the scale but I have all winter to practice. At least you have an instructor in your area. I can't find anybody closer than 250 miles from me so it's all by bits and pieces I pick up at the conventions and the Forum. If I get up the nerve, maybe my debut will be at the Winchester convention in July. I don't know if you are a member of the Aloha International Steel Guitar Club but if you are maybe we both can make our debut. You know, misery loves company.

I was one of the other uke players at the Joliet jam sessions (<a href="http://www.hsga.org/Joliet2005Pictures/ ... 05-016.htm">
I am </a> playing the cheap old Regal uke. This was the first one of these events I'd been to.

You should have also gone to the Midwest Uke Fest in Indy on Halloween weekend, it was a blast. Plus, Gerald held a class/workshop on lap steel. My skill rating went from negative 15 to right around -12 or so. Next year he's going to let me play plugged in to the amp. If I practice.

Hey, Jeff. Thanks for sharing the ride to the airport. The return trip was fairly un-eventful. Ran into a plane full of USC cheerleaders from some Rugby game. Could of been worse.

Thanks Rick for taking the time to educate us on pickups. I have a T logo Ric that has a loud string. I tried different strings but it’s still louder than the others. Is there a fix?

Thanks Bill, It’s hard to like a guy that can just pick up any instrument and play it like you do. I’ll have to get past that part. You and Gerald Rock.

You bet Andy. If I am trying to figure out a song, I get the words from http://www.huapala.org/ and steal the melody from http://www.mele.com/lyrics.html. They sell CD’s and have a sound clip for each cut. Very Cool for a guy trying to research a song.

Well ... doesn't sound like the bobbin is bad ... so thats good.

T-logos are "notorious" for having very strong magnets ... yet for some odd reason ... they were not charged well initially.

I have had many, many come thru ... and they almost always are down 50% or more ... and often ... very uneven (1 magnet stronger than its buddy).

You could also have a "height adjustment issue" ...

Here's some info on how I set height ... Settin' Height on Rickys. (scroll all the way down).

Try that ... and if that doesn't help ... send me the magnets for a good "jolt" ... there are instructions on that same page for removing them w/o disturbing the wirin'.

On second thought ...

Even if settin' the height does helps ... send me the magnets anyway ... you'll be glad you did ...
