Steeler on Charlie Louvin's Capitol hits?

Post by GaryHoetker »

"I Think I'll Go Somewhere and Cry Myself to Sleep", "See the Big Man Cry" are some of the songs. I sure sounds alot like Sonny Garrish's style of playing.

Could be -- but I saw him play several times -- like at Midnite Jamboree, etc., and Pete Drake was always with him.

I was working for Charlie in those days, and it was Pete on all but a few album cuts that were never played anyway.

When i saw him at Silver Springs Pa., he had Ron Jewett on steel and he was a fine player. Seem to recall he was playing a Marrs D-10. Think he was on The Album that included "Think I"ll Go Somewhere and Cry Myself To Sleep". He also appeared with Charlie on Nashville Now.

I LOVE Charlie's Capitol stuff. I have all of the LP's plus a duet LP with Melba Montgomery. There is some wonderful singing and great steel playing on them.

You can throw me in with everyone else here.
In the early seventies, unfortunately, most of the Capitol stuff was already out of circulation. I have "Will You Visit Me On Sundays?" (also cut by George Jones and several others). Pretty sparse steel on there; hard to say who it was, defintely not
Pete Drake.
Earlier Capitol album titles include "I Don't Love You Anymore." I'm sure there were quite a few others...
Neil Flanz worked the road with Charlie, maybe he'll step in and set us straight.

Joe.

I asked Charlie and this is what he said:

"there were several different steel players on my capitol stuff like "buddy emmons"", "lloyd green" "Jim Vest"
and Pete Drake cut one session
of mine."

I thought Sonny Burnette cut some recordings with Charlie also. Maybe I'm mistaken but I do know he did some road dates with him.Anybody know. Bobby

My Dad(Tommy Hagan) was singing with Charlie at the time His first album was recorded.I ask him who was doing the steel work on the album. He said he thought Hal Rugg was on (Book of Memories)the b side of I don't love you anymore. He also said it was Hal on What can any man do for a woman on that same album. He's not for sure but he said he was almost certain that it was Hal.I hope this helps
