My local PBS station, KCPT in Kansas City is broadcasting a concert by Martina with Paul Franklin in the band. They are performing "classic country" songs from what she says is a new CD & Paul's playing is unbelievable-clearly the most & best steel I have ever heard on national TV with the possible exception of Greg Liez on "Return of the Grievous Angel " a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, I think Martina's renditions of these songs are awful, but Paul's playing more than makes up for it. Tune in if you can.

I worked on that PBS show and I thought Paul's playing, tone and focus, during rehearsals and the taping were just unbelievable. The HD video close-ups of Paul's hands are so clear, you can see that he uses two different brands of finger picks.

I posted my initial post 1/2 way through the show. Martina has a new album of country standards & she would announce that she was going to do one by Merle Haggard & launch into it. My wife started howling-my dog started howling- what can I say. Same goes for her Everly, Tammy, Ray Price, Ray Charles songs. I'd rather hear the originals. However, the last third of the show she started doing her hits & there she sparked up & hit the mark & I enjoyed her -very talented. However, Paul then lapsed into the modern sort of steel guitar whispers & moans that you hear on her records & the lead guitar player started playing like he was at Woodstock & I lost interest. I guess nothing is perfect. All in all still a very good show.

Glenn,
You can usually check the website of your local PBS affiliate. Look for a show called Soundstage. There is a chance that it will be aired several times.

Tom,
During the second portion of the show, where the hits and contemporary music were played, Martina used her road band, which was almost completely different than during the Timeless segment. I thought her steel player, Wayne Dahl, played great. There was a version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, that didn't make it to air. Wayne's solo was just gorgeous.

Sure is strange. I have been a huge Paul Franklin fan since about 25 years. I don't think there is a better player on the planet. However, I don't think there is a better steel player on the planet than Tommy White or Buddy Emmons. After, I saw Martina on that special I am now a Martina McBride fan. I thought see did great. I guess that is how all the different acts survive. We all have different taste in music. I think Martina is as good as any female singer out there.

In my opinion only, I think Martina reached down and pulled the heartstrings of a lot of us classic country lovers with the "Timeless" CD. I only wish more singers would include material like this in there CD's, etc. As far as Paul Franklin's playing on the CD. Hey it's classic Franklin and some of the best soulful steel work I've heard in a long time. To me, this is what "Country" is all about.

Fantastic vocals & pickin'!!!
Really the best I've heard in a long time.
We fired up the CD at the club the other night while we were setting up & everyone there had nothing but compliments for the whole CD.

Regardless if you like her singing or not you have to give her respect for what she is doing for traditional county music on her new CD. I personaly think she does a great job on this CD, and hope she has great sucess with it. Maybe others will follow in her foot steps and give us more of the traditional country, which means more STEEL GUITAR.

As I posted below, I saw a similar show on a re-run Grand Old Opry broadcast Saturday night. I thought she was pretty good, and Paul's playing was solid and very soulful.

I played a million gigs on the pedal steel/Telecaster as a young guy. I know one thing: the golden rule prevails -- he who has the gold makes the rules. If the producer says play this or that, well that's what you play...period.

Paul demonstrated on that concert that he can play stuff that will knock anyone out from any musical background, from Blues to Beethoven. I'm glad that the camera focused up close on him for those brief seconds tor reveal a killer-diller picker who makes money the hard way -- one note at a time in Nashville TN...
