Two steel guitarists with the same name.

Post by Mike Perlowin »

We have a member here by the name is David Zieglar. That is also the name of a very fine steel guitarist here in California. The California David Zieglar is not only a fine player, he is also an excellent teacher. I took some lessons from him back when.

To our fellow forumite Dave- I'm expecting great things from you. You've got a lot to live up to. Image
[This message was edited by Mike Perlowin on 03 December 2005 at 06:22 AM.]

Two other fine steel players are Mike Dailey with Hank Jr. and Mike Daily with George Strait. Bet there is lots more with the same names.

How may times did you accidentally sit down at the drums in all the confusion?

For years, our band has always had 3 "Mike"s on the roster. We don't plan this. It just works out that way.

Seems like we'll lose one "Mike" and gain another in his place.

How weird is that?

In 1963, 64 or 65 (don't remember exact year) I met Billy Cooper in Coos Bay, Oregon who went by the name of Coop. He had finished a 7 year gig with Ferlin Husky. And there's Billy Cooper in Virginia. No relationship, I asked.

The company I work for hired a manager named Bobby Lee, over my objections! He didn't last long...

There is a eminent Harvard historian named David W. Donald,
who actually lived in Lincoln Mass, one town over from my home town.
He is about 30 years older, and has written a great book on aviation history, that I have, among others.

My name is pretty uncommon.
Though I do have two 1800's Scot's anceistors with it.
But I was named NOT knowing of them at the time.

Is seriously don't expect there will EVER be
a steeler besides me, with my name.

My initials are R.J. (R.J. Ayres)

When Reynolds Aluminum's corporate offices were in Louisville while I lived there, the company's C.E.O. was named "Arjay Ayres".

I guess I'm safe enough. Doesn't seem much chance of the other James(Caan)taking it up.

. . . but if he does, well, what the hell!

As of a couple of weeks ago, there are 2 David Wright's, that are members. I'm the one that's in Nashville learning how to play, he's the one in California, that KNOWS how to play.

There's a Herb Steiner who's a heavy academic ph.D and the Chairman of one of the Physics Depts. at UC Berkeley (where, interestingly, I went to school briefly in the 1960s). He's about 10 years older than I am.

I've known about him for about 15 years, but just last year I got an email from him. In it he said that he had just Googled his name to see all that was written about himself, and he was really disappointed to find that after a 40-year-plus career in education and the sciences, the first 80 entries were about this steel guitar player in Texas!

I told him he needed to get out more! Image

Thare are actually TWO other guys named Mike Perlowin, (both cousins, named after our grandfather) and one of them is even a musician. The musician's middle name is Michael, so I don't know if it counts though.

The other one apparantly has inherited all his genes from a side of his family that is not musical. He is now retired, but owned a car dealership at one time.
