| For a Xmas treat for myself I want to get a couple of CDs featuring Jay Dee Maness on steel. He is such an inspiration to me. | You can listen to a little of Jay Dee's playing at his web site; www.jaydeemaness.com....and on these videos, that I play often, just check out his feel, touch, tone or whatever you want to call it, IMO there is none better. IMO his pitch is as close to perfect as possible, with a solid approach to everything he does with no or little bar movement because he is that good when he "hits" it, everytime. I'll bet that a lot of musicians have purchased these videos to study and get a "feel" for his technique and approach. I don't see how it can get any better; watching him on tape just nails it. For years Jay Dee has won awards and long ago I emailed Scotty wondering why he wasn't in the SGHOF, which was probably in the works unbeknowns to me at that time. I believe that videos lets one get a little closer to the artist and his vocal instruction has always benefited me. I just think that it, coupled with the tab can really help anyone, and I do mean anyone in the business. The first time I walked in where he was playing, long ago, I was simply amazed. I had never heard better. Check out what he did with Eric Clapton for example. |

Check out Byron Berline's "Outrageous".
There's only a couple of steel solos, but they're worth the price of admission.

We were lucky enough to have Jay Dee work on our album, MAYBE I'M A HOUND DOG last year. there are some really cool solos, and Jay Dee really sweet and unique personal touch is all over the album (and very present in the mix...)

'Safe At Home' by Gram Parsons and the International Submarine Band is my hands-down favorite.
It's not out on CD but Buck Owens 'Live in London' is another classic.
And don't forget 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' by the Byrds. I know it's more Lloyd than JayDee, but man he sounds great on "You Don't Miss Your Water", etc.[This message was edited by scott murray on 01 December 2005 at 05:35 PM.] |

I've had the good fortune to see Jay Dee play dozens of times in the 30 years I've lived in L.A. and have shared the stage in a twin steel lineup a few times. Add to that the many times I've recorded him in my studio and sat next to him in the control room watching him play and what can I say - he makes what he does look easy.
One time in the studio he played some beautiful turnaround with a real slick resolve at the end and I stopped him and said "What in the hell was that?" He just said "Oh,that was just a seventh chord....." |

I have all of the recordings/DVD's mentioned in the posts plus the great cut of Misty by Ray Stevens (perhaps Jay Dee will share the story someday of how he ended up on that session)... this is the one that bagged me!

so they finally reissued that bugger! wonderful news. I've been hounding them for years to get that one out, but I always got a negative response.
there's an instrumental on there called "A Happening in Londontown"... JayDee plays a great rocking single-note ride, and Don Rich plays what's gotta be the weirdest solo of his career. It sounds like one of those backward guitar parts you'd hear on a Beatles record. |

If you like a lot of backup steel of JayDee the "Bakersfield Bound" are packed with it and it`s great.
There`s a LP/CD of Chris Hillman called "Desert Rose" from 1984. I think this was released just before they formed the Desert Rose Band.
In my book JayDee are one of the best and freshest steelplaying you can ever listen to.

I've gotta say Bakersfield Bound is my favorite but Jay Dee's work is always inspiring.
Quick story, I met Jay Dee at Viva Fresh in Burbank, CA a few years back after I'd just started playing PSG. I'd had my guitar for about 2 weeks when I went to see Jay Dee play. I told him I was learning to play and he offered to let me sit in with the band on his infamous '69 black beauty Emmons PP. I respectfully declined, but his gracious offer, genuiness and encouragement will always be remembered. Thanks Jay Dee!
