Since this topic has come up a few times, I
thought I'd shed some light on what the original vinyl releases were, and what you
can expect to find on CD today.
To let you know, I'm not a fanatic, so I can't tell you about unreleased tracks that are sparsely integrated into the many collections that are available, as Rick's
(Ricky, as some may prefer) recording history
is (as many know), a long one. Good luck, and
this search was mainly done on Amazon.com (no
plug, though they tend to be dependable, even if you're going through a third-party vendor).
Much of the vinyl release info was gathered from the official Rick Nelson website.

I hope this helps somebody out.
BGO has done a good/great job with releasing
the Capitol Merle Haggard stuff that Capitol
won't re-release. They're all two-fers, some
of the pairings don't always make sense, but
at least each album is complete instead of broken up into little pieces over scads of
compilations, which is the style these days.
Joe.

Rick Nelson - Rick's Rarities 1964-1974
(Ace Records UK, CDCHD995)
Some 1969 outtakes, unfinished, b-sides, a previously unissed live Troubador track from '69 alongside outtakes and rare from the previous years. Also on 1974 track.
An insight into the Stone Canyon band's 1969 evolution and a track with no steeler as they were inbetween Buddy, Sneaky Pete and Tom.
And yes.. Sneaky did play with Ricky.. although he bailed on the band's 1969 debut.

Hey Joe, I was lucky enough to see Rick & the SCB with Tom Brumley on steel at the John Wayne Theater in Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, Ca. somewhere in the early 70's. Would that show be any of these listed? Thanks, JH in Va.

Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!!

Jason--thanks for the information. I would
encourage anyone and everyone who have any of
the numerous compilations to chime in and
enlighten the rest of us to any additional
unreleased, partial or incomplete takes, and
especially live material that hasn't appeared
on the original releases. With respect to live material, surpassing the performance quality of the Troubadour show would be pretty tough, but, on the other hand, Tom was
with Rick for nine years, and I would like to
think there is additional stuff out there that is equally good and needs to be heard.
Which brings us to Jerry's question about the
Knot's Berry Farm performances; I know the
band played there many times, but I've never
heard mention of anything taped or otherwise.
One other area is the gap between "Windfall"
and the four to five year period where Tom was
still playing with Rick until leaving the band in 1979 (?). Did Rick just run out of
material or-----? Maybe someone can provide
some insight on this.
I haven't read the Joel Selvin book, so maybe
some answers would come to light there...
Joe. |

When I was working at the Pal in 1981, one of the sound guys there mentioned that he
urged Rick to seek out Buddy to join the Stone Canyon Band.
The same sound guy added that Rusty Young was also considered at the beginning
stage.
All of this is certainly possible given that
1969 was the seminal year for many bands, Rick's, the Flying Burrito Bros, Poco and others in the LA area. |

Rick's gap between releases were record industry related, partially due to his lack of sales.
