Well, I'm pretty much a newbie to steel, so take my opinions with a grain or two of salt. I tried the E6 and it was definitely easier to find the chord positions, but the tonality was too similar to the E9 for my taste. I liken switching necks to switching from the bridge pickup to the neck pickup on a guitar, my whole mindset changes at the flick of the switch from chicken picken' to swingy/jazzy 6ths and 9ths.
It's taken some work, but I am begining to get the hang of the C6th.
I guess whatever works!
Regards,
Joe
