I have an mp3 of Gram Parsons and Emmylou doing a live version of Juanita...probably came from Bearshare or something. It isn't on the Live 1973 CD, and I haven't been able to find it on any Gram discography. I'm wondering who the steel player is. Pretty sure it was a Fallen Angels tour. I'm thinking either Al Perkins or Neil Flanz. Any ideas?

If it was the Fallen Angels tour; than it was Neil Flanz.

Mike,

Neil Flanz did the only Fallen Angels tour, with Gram and Emmylou, in 1973. Al Perkins only played on Gram's studio stuff. That's got to be Neil you're hearing.

I'm puzzled, however, by "Juanita" live...didn't know Gram and Emmylou did that tune on tour. Neil probably knows....

Mr. Flanz, are you around?

You've got me stumped as well. I don't recall ever doing Juanita on the tour or even running over it at our rehearsals. I recorded it with my friend Mark Holland from Tampa on a "Porch Pickers" album about five years ago but that's the only time that I can recall playing on it.

I just remembered a CD called "Return Of The Grievous Angel" (a tribute to Gram Parsons)on which Sheryl Crow & EmmyLou Harris sang Juanita (track #7) but it's not live and Gram doesn't sing on it. Greg Liesz is creditied with the pedal steel work. Very pretty!!

Hey, Neil.....I guess we can rule out the Fallen Angels as the source of this version.

Thanks for sending the tune, Mike. what a great version. The male vocal is not Gram, but it's definitely Emmylou.

I'm going to make a stab at it now - Rodney Crowell and Emmylou, with Hank Devito on steel. My Second guess would be Chris Hillman and Emmylou, with Jay Dee Maness on steel. I find Crowell and Hillman sing a lot alike.

A check into a list of Hot Band and Desert Rose Band live recordings might solve this mystery.

OK...found it.

It's from Emmylou's album "Last date"

Haven't dug into who's playing, but the sample on the link is the same version.

That'll be Steve Fishell then, I believe.

So, would that be Barry Tashian on the vocals? Didn't he do a lot of duets with her in the 80's when he was in the Hot Band? Since Rodney Crowell was mentioned,it does sound like him as well. Isn't the Forum a great place to get information?

Crowell.

I saw Chris Hillman live two weeks ago, Rodney Crowell live a month ago-Rodney always has a bit of that Texas twang-I think they're pretty easy to tell apart.

If it's from the "Last Date" Lp, it is Barry Tashian singing and Steve Fishell on steel.

"Last Date" is one of the best live albums I've ever heard - I hear and feel the same energy that I experienced when I saw the same version of teh Hot Band.

Last one with John Ware, the original Hot Bnad drummer, and pretty much the end of her 1970s band.
